A weekend full of programs: lumbung film, music, conversations, and workshops
August 12–14, 2022
Venues: Kulturzentrum Schlachthof, Boreal, Nordstadtpark, and Gloria-Kino
documenta fifteen is happy to announce the upcoming Meydan weekend #2, taking place in Kassel August 12–14, 2022. In collaboration with Kulturzentrum Schlachthof, Meydan #2 includes a music program, lumbung Film, a flea market, conversations, and workshops.
Meydan as a word is used in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Urdu to refer to a public area used for coming together, a square, or a public park. It’s an accessible space for having assemblies to discuss, to dissent, and to celebrate.
Kulturzentrum Schlachthof, Boreal, and Nordstadtpark
Address: Mombachstraße 10–12, 34127 Kassel
Opening hours: Friday and Saturday: 2pm–4am, Sunday: 2–8pm
Musicians, such as Ebow, Khun Narin’s Electric Phin Band, La Nefera, Nina Ogot, TootArd, and many more, will be performing at Nordstadtpark. In addition, collectives Alvozay and Room 4 Resistance are invited to host performances, parties, DJ sets, and workshops.
Meydan #2 also includes gatherings with Composting Knowledge, an ongoing experimental network for knowledge production, initiated by ruruHaus in Kassel. Based on the idea of collectively cultivated compost, it brings together various organic materials and resources—such as knowledge, time, ideas, spaces, or funds—to embrace cooperative, non-hierarchical, neighborhood centered principles. Currently the composting network reunites over 20 participants from Kassel, Tokyo, Sofia, Holualoa, Singapore, Beirut, Zurich, Toronto, Stockholm, and London.
As part of Meydan, the grand opening of the 24th Kasseler Weltmusikfestival takes place at Kulturzentrum Schlachthof, Boreal, and Nordstadtpark.
Gloria-Kino
Address: Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 3, 34117 Kassel
Opening hours: Friday and Saturday: 7–10pm, Sunday: 5:15–10pm
GDR International is specifically curated for Meydan weekend #2. In response to the lumbung Film program by lumbung artists, it refers to the remarkable presence of archives as residues of parallel histories and networks of solidarity at documenta fifteen. Berlin-based curator Tobias Hering has selected films by Peter Ulbrich, Emile de Antonio, and Chetna Vora to reflect on how the internationalist agenda of Socialist East Germany (German Democratic Republic) affected the country’s film production and film politics. The program addresses how as a collateral to the GDR’s wholesale delegitimization in official German History, an adequate appreciation of East German solidarity with independence movements in the Global South remains wanting. The films will be shown at Gloria-Kino, opened in 1954 and preserving the character of a 1950s movie theater. Films are in English, respectively in German with English subtitles.
The Meydan program takes place every second weekend of the month during documenta fifteen. The first one took place July 8–10, the upcoming one will be held August 12–14, and the last one will be between September 9–11, 2022. Meydan is a collaboration with Kassel ekosistem—various collectives and initiatives active in Kassel and invited by ruangrupa to practice lumbung together.
The full program will be announced soon on documenta fifteen’s website. The entrance is free.
