Movement, diversity, festivity, transformation. With ACROSS we ask how we as neighbours, as people with diverse biographies, humans with vulnerable bodies can come together in public space through artistic interventions and choreographies, reaching across communities, crises, and spaces. ACROSS is a socially dynamic series of events with more than 16 groups and solo performers curated by a team of curators from Berlin’s independent scene organised by XO Curatorial Projects.
During our research in the past two years of lockdown, we identified a strong need for corporeal and improvisational encounters and meetings, new explorations through exchange. How can artistic interaction turn the public space of Wedding, a district in Berlin, into a safer space for all people?
ACROSS brings together international Berlin-based dancers, artists, musicians and a diverse audience in an urban setting, with a focus on unconventional movement. ACROSS is curated by choreographer, dancer and curator of the independent scene Nitsan Margaliot (Israel/Berlin), curator and activist, Kathrin Pohlmann (Berlin), as well as curator and artistic director of Galerie Wedding, Solvej Helweg Ovesen (Denmark/Berlin). Nitsan Margaliot recently co-initiated touchingmargins.com, a web platform showcasing dance archives from the margins, whereas Kathrin Pohlmann co-founded XO Curatorial Projects together with Solvej Helweg Ovesen. Their last project was “Existing Otherwise - The Future of Coexistence”, an exhibition that started in Berlin Galerie Wedding and was concluded at SCCA, Redclay Studios, and Nkrumah Voli-ni in Tamale, Ghana, co-curated by Ibrahim Mahama, 2022.
Set within Berlin’s cultural landscape of events, Movement Research ACROSS is a diverse platform for social and aesthetic movement research, an urban meeting place, open for everyone, bypassers, neighbours, visitors, and allies. ACROSS is the continuation of the outdoor program Movement Research | Testplatz Wedding at Galerie Wedding, 2021.
For ACROSS visual artist Viron Erol Vert will design and build “Flexible Colour Circle”, a bespoke social and inhabitable space on Wedding’s town hall square. The creation of this rainbow-coloured stage was inspired by artist Emily Noyes Vanderpoel’s (1842-1939) colour charts on the imaginary effects of colour as well as Johannes Itten’s (1888-1967) colour wheel and his ideas of colour determining shape.
Acting as an open amphitheatre for the audience, “Flexible Colour Circle” will serve as a Movement Research area for performances and as a setting for everyday life on the square. Directly adjacent to the town hall square is Galerie Wedding. Here, the complementary part of the movement research will take place alongside an exhibition and live performances, serving as an open “backstage” for the performers and audiences throughout June and July. Artists RA Walden, Jimmy Robert, André Uerba and Angela Alves will transform Galerie Wedding with their exhibition on the subject of pause and accidental movement.
