The Digital Building

Casa da Arquitectura—Portuguese Centre for Architecture is delighted to announce the launch of the Digital Building on May 13, in a presentation event that will be broadcast online.

On the following day, the debate “Challenges of the Digital Archive” brings together an unmissable array of national and international guests.

Casa da Arquitectura has been developing a digital consolidation strategy that promotes the globalization of knowledge and research around architecture.

The Digital Building is a set of three online platforms that will make available, free of charge and in a bilingual version—Portuguese and English—progressive access to scanned materials from the collections and estates of architects such as Eduardo Souto de Moura, Paulo Mendes da Rocha, João Luís Carrilho da Graça and Lucio Costa, among many others.

These platforms constitute an open model for sharing information, offering, in addition to the digital archive, all the information about the history of Casa in the last four years, virtual visits to the exhibitions that have been on display since 2019 and a new online Shop.

It is a big step towards the democratization of access to the legacy of some of the most prominent names in national and international contemporary architecture and a unique opportunity for the study and academic research on these authors and their work from anywhere in the world.

Based on concepts of democracy, accessibility and knowledge, the new Digital Building opens the extraordinary architectural heritage under the care of Casa da Arquitectura to the greatest possible number of students, professionals, researchers, architects and academic and cultural institutions from all over the world.

It is also an information point for our activities and programs. News, agenda, exhibitions, debates and conversations, presentations, guided and inclusive visits to exhibitions and architectural works, all the activities of the Casa’s Educational Service, available for online consulting and booking.

Open to universal consultation, but also to the academic use of materials by researchers, the Digital Archive is a strategic part of the Studies and Documentation Centre of Casa da Arquitectura.

Recently created, the Study Centre proposes to publish theses dedicated to the Casa’s collections and developed by the scientific and academic community, as well as ensuring the grant of scholarships in partnership with Portuguese universities.

The recently opened Casa Residences, installed in the former family home of the architect Álvaro Siza, in Matosinhos, ensure the reception of researchers, curators and architects interested in working with Casa da Arquitectura.

Culminating after two years of work, the launch of the Digital Building will take place on the 13th of May, at 9:30 pm, in an event that can be followed live at casadaarquitectura.pt.

On the next day, May 14, at 5pm, the debate “Challenges of the Digital Archive” brings together national and international guests for a reflection and a look at the world of digital archives.
