May 5–22, 2022
Latitude – Platform for Brazilian Art Galleries Abroad, a partnership between ABACT (Brazilian Association of Contemporary Art Galleries) and ApexBrasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), is delighted to announce the participation of its member galleries at the 2022 edition of Frieze New York, which takes place from May 18–22, 2022.
The 2022 edition features 65 galleries, of which six are Latitude members. Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel joins with an installation by Bárbara Wagner, consisting of 20 portraits and a video from an MC contest in Brazil, where Wagner examines the performative space as a symbolic place of struggle, resistance, and social ascension.
Galeria Marilia Razuk and Galeria Jaqueline Martins present the project At once: provocation and reflection—an unprecedented dialogue between the works of Brazilian artists José Leonilson (1957–1993) and Hudinilson Jr. (1957–2013)—to the main section of Frieze New York. Documented in the form of journals and photos, their work converges with precision and intensity to deal with two major issues of their generation: sexual freedom and the tragedy of the HIV pandemic.
Sé debuts at Frieze New York in the Frame section with a solo show by Rebecca Sharp, exploring surrealist imagery through painting and sculpture. Aimed at young spaces and emerging talents, Frame is a critical arena dedicated to solo projects by galleries from around the world active for ten years or less.
Galeria Luisa Strina brings a collection of works by Latin American and European artists to explore how they use language and cultural baggage to communicate ideas. The gallery showcases works by Robert Rauschenberg, Fernanda Gomes, Laura Lima, Marepe, Jorge Macchi, Clarissa Tossin, Alexandre da Cunha, Anna Maria Maiolino, Renata Lucas, Alfredo Jaar, Leonor Antunes, Pedro Reyes, Tonico Lemos Auad, Cildo Meireles and Magdalena Jitrik.
Mendes Wood DM presents a selection of highlights, emphasizing contextualization of the global South through the exhibition of international and Brazilian artists, promoting critical dialogue and cross-pollination. Solange Pessoa will feature with a significant new diptych work in the same series as her major presentation at the Venice Biennale. There will be a mini-presentation of ceramic works by Paulo Nimer Pjota, demonstrating his deft use of a wide variety of media and visual references. Paulo Nazareth will be featured with photographic works spanning the last decade, complimenting his concurrent exhibition at the gallery’s new space at 47 Walker. New works by Paulo Monteiro will reveal a comprehensive look at his practice across media. A new series of Camboatã leaf and silver-leaf foil works by Daniel Steegmann Mangrané will be presented alongside sculptures by Mariana Castillo Deball. Significant historical work by Kishio Suga and Anna Bella Geiger will show with new works by emerging artists within the program such as Guglielmo Castelli, Alvaro Barrington, Paula Siebra, and Mimi Lauter.
Latitude continues to support the participation of its member galleries at selected international art fairs. In May, A Gentil Carioca presents Vinicius Gerheim’s first international solo show at the Independent Art Fair 2022 in New York, from May 5–8, and Gomide & Co showcases a selection of works by Mira Schendel, Helio Oiticica, Ivan Serpa, Lygia Clark, Lygia Pape, Willys de Castro and Sergio Camargo at TEFAF New York Spring, from May 6–10.
