The Art Students League of New York is now accepting applications for its 2022 grants and scholarships.

For over a century, The Art Students League of New York has helped emerging artists to gain access to a high-quality education through The League’s grants and scholarships, which have covered the cost of tuition and provided funds to supplement the education of thousands of League students over the years. Past scholarship recipients of League scholarships include Norman Rockwell, James Rosenquist, and Tshabalala Self, among others.

New opportunities this year include The Bruce Dorfman Grant for Assemblage/Mixed Media, Ezra Jack Keats Scholarships for Illustration open to BIPOC artists, Portraits for Good Scholarship for BIPOC artists working in figurative painting, the Richard Tweedy Drawing Scholarship, and the Davyd Whaley Memorial Scholarship for abstract painting. A full list of available opportunities can be found on The League’s website

The League’s scholarships are open to current and new/incoming students. Additional requirements must be met for grant applications, including a requirement for course hours. A full listing of requirements can be found on The League’s website

Applicants are reviewed by a panel of judges, unaffiliated with The League, who each represent an important and unique perspective on artmaking, fine arts education, and the art world at large. The 2022 panel of jurors includes Mitra Abbaspour, Will Cotton, Patricia Cronin, Deborah Kass, David Kassan, Jim Lee, Tavares Strachan, Christian Viveros-Fauné, Jasmine Wahi, and Shoshanna Weinberger. The goal of The League’s grants and scholarships is to provide new and greater opportunities to artists who need them.

All applications are due by May 15. Jurors will review all applications by June 15, and winners will be announced shortly after.

The Art Students League of New York has been making high-quality, studio-based art education accessible to all for almost 150 years. Founded in 1875 by a group of independent artists who dreamed of a place where anyone with a passion for art would have the space to make it, today The League hosts over 100 classes, taught in-studio and online. No applications, no prerequisites, and affordable, month-to-month tuition allow students to find their freedom and pursue their artwork free from the constraints of dogma. Our instructors educate students in an environment that values mentorship and collegiality and centers diverse art-making practices, including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and assemblage. Our ongoing lineage of accomplished instructors is matched by our legacy of extraordinary students. Artists who have studied or taught at The League include Georgia O’Keeffe, Robert Rauschenberg, Louise Bourgeois, Norman Lewis, Yayoi Kusama, and many others.
