The Stiftung Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, an internationally unique collection of paintings of the historical avant-gardes of the 20th century and contemporary art, is a foundation under private law with two venues in Düsseldorf: K20 and K21. As an internationally renowned institution with special responsibility for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and some 100 staff members, it preserves, manages, researches, and mediates the state art collection and the foundation’s own holdings and makes these accessible to the public in a national and international context within the framework of permanent and temporary exhibitions.
We are currently seeking a Head of the Curatorial Department (m/f/d).
Your role
–Deputy to the director and representation of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen internally and externally
–Participation in the planning and conceptual orientation of the overall program with special attention to internationality and polyphony
–Conception of the scholarly-curatorial program of K20 in cooperation with the director and its implementation together with the team—coordination of all related processes
–Conception and realization of exhibitions, other scholarly projects (e.g. symposia, lectures), and publications
–Preparation of scholarly reports and statements
–Cooperation with national and international museums, as well as maintaining international networks
–Managerial responsibility for the staff of the curatorial department and the library
–Regular exchange with the departments of exhibition management, conservation, and education, as well as with the registrar
–Budget responsibility and acquisition of sponsors
–Content-related and scholarly processing of funding applications
–Close and regular exchange with the stakeholders of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, such as, for example, the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia
Requirements
–Successful completion of a university degree in art history, art theory/criticism, or comparable
–Extensive, specialized knowledge in the field of international classical modernism and contemporary art
–High level of managerial, organizational, and communication skills and above-average commitment
–Years of curatorial experience in responsible positions in national/international museums
–A very good network within the national and international art scene
–Very good language skills in at least German and English
