Centraal Museum at Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd
April 16–August 21, 2022
From 2022 to 2026, the Centraal Museum is taking up residence at Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd. From spring to autumn for the next five years, this beautiful country estate will form the backdrop for a solo exhibition by a renowned Dutch contemporary artist. On the first floor of the mansion, the museum will give artists carte blanche to present works that interact with the historical interiors. We are delighted that the artist Amie Dicke is kicking off the series of exhibitions. Her work can be seen here from April 16 to August 21, 2022.
Amie Dicke (Rotterdam, 1978) creates her works by manipulating carefully selected images from fashion magazines, newspapers and art books. Initially she was driven primarily by her fascination with the fashion industry and how models are depicted in fashion magazines. She was both attracted to the ideal of beauty they present and experienced a simultaneous sense of alienation from the stereotypes they impose.
Dicke asks herself how people deal with the barrage of images they are subjected to every day. How do I read an image? What kind of images am I made of? She seeks to understand them by reacting to them and appropriating them. Each image is carefully manipulated using a range of techniques that Dicke has developed and perfected in recent years, including sanding, cutting with a scalpel, and applying ink or make-up.
This exhibition brings together a selection of works from the past 20 years, presented in a dialogue with the historical interiors: just as Dicke creates new images by removing parts of the original, the rooms in Oud Amelisweerd are the result of layers of historical interventions.
This program is made possible by the generous support of the Hartwig Art Foundation.
