November 3–6, 2022
A central event for professionals and art lovers, Artissima 2022 will take place from November 4–6 in Torino (Preview November 3), under the guidance of Luigi Fassi, recently appointed director on a three-year term.
The only Italian fair exclusively focusing on contemporary art, Artissima stands out on the international scene for its experimental, cutting-edge and sophisticated identity, and for the high quality exhibits.
The 2022 edition of the fair is composed of four flagship sections (Main Section, Monologue/Dialogue, New Entries, Art Spaces & Editions) and three curated sections (Present Future, Back to the Future, Disegni) presented both physically at the fair and virtually on a dedicated digital platform.
A new theme will symbolically cross the sections – Transformative Experience, a concept developed by the American philosopher L.A. Paul. According to the author, a transformative experience is capable of radically changing the person who goes through it, throwing rationally envisioned expectations into crisis and opening up a perspective on the unknown. The encounter with art is undoubtedly transformative and at the same time a revelatory experience: an intense acceleration towards an unknown but desired future, capable of altering us in cognitive and personal terms, while providing new tools for interpretation of the world.
The flagship sections: application deadline May 25, 2022
Main Section brings together outstanding galleries from the international art world: established names offer collectors and art lovers an event of the highest quality.
Monologue/Dialogue is reserved to emerging galleries or galleries with an experimental approach applying with either a monographic booth or with a dialogue of works by two artists.
New Entries presents a selection of the most interesting emerging galleries from the international art scene, that have been open less than five years and taking part in Artissima for the first time.
Art Spaces & Editions is a special section exclusively devoted to galleries and non-profit spaces presenting editions, prints and multiples by contemporary artists.
The Selection Committee of the galleries taking part in the Main Section, New Entries, Monologue/Dialogue and Art Spaces & Editions involves an international team of gallerists composed of Isabella Bortolozzi, Isabella Bortolozzi gallery in Berlin, Paola Capata, Monitor gallery in Rome, Lisbon and Pereto, Philippe Charpentier, mor charpentier gallery in Paris and Bogotá, Raffaella Cortese, Raffaella Cortese gallery in Milan, Nikolaus Oberhuber, KOW gallery in Berlin, and Alessandro Pasotti, P420 gallery in Bologna, now joined by a new member: Antoine Levi of Ciaccia Levi gallery in Paris and Milan. Caterina Avataneo, an independent curator based in Turin, is confirmed as curatorial consultant for the New Entries section.
The curated sections: application deadline May 10, 2022
Present Future, curated by Saim Demircan (independent curator and writer, Turin) and Maurin Dietrich (director, Kunstverein München, Munich), showcases emerging talents, preferably less than 40 years old. The artists, presented by their reference galleries, are selected on the basis of a specific project.
Back to the Future, curated by Anna Gritz (director, Haus am Waldsee, Berlin) and Balthazar Lovay (independent curator and editor, Geneva), presents solo projects on great pioneers of contemporary art, whose work has played a key role in art history. The selection gathers works made from 1960 to the present.
Disegni, curated by Irina Zucca Alessandrelli (curator, Collezione Ramo, Milan), is the only section in Italian art fairs dedicated to this medium. It presents projects conceived as solo shows that enhance the authenticity and autonomy of the work on paper.
In 2022, Artissima introduces a new development to add value to its innovative, pioneering identity. Julie Boukobza (independent curator based in Paris, and Head, Luma Arles Residency Program, Arles) and Krist Gruijthuijsen (director, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin) will be the Curatorial Advisors for this iteration of the fair. Together with the Selection Committee and the team of curators, they will contribute to formulate and convey a proposal for 2022 that will underscore the experimental character of Artissima, bringing out the fair’s distinctive focus on discovery and rediscovery of the most interesting realities of contemporary art on the international scene.
