Our One-Year Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Creative Practice is for artists, curators, writers, performers, and other creative researchers with an established practice (ten years or more) and a particular research question or project in mind. Flexible, rigorous, self-directed and expansive, Transart’s MFA supports you to create a sustainable praxis while you develop a global community of peers and advisors. This new course is offered in partnership with our accrediting partner Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU).

Upcoming summer intensives—Berlin, Documenta 15, Liverpool
In July 2022, Transart will welcome incoming MFA and PhD students, continuing PhDs and alumni to join us for a Micro-residency visiting the 12th Berlin Biennale, curated by artist Kader Attia, and Documenta 15 curated by Jakarta-based collective Ruangrupa. From there we will spend two weeks in Liverpool connecting with local art communities and getting to know LJMU researchers, faculty, research labs and institutional partners such as, LJMU Exhibition Research Lab, City Lab, Experimental Technologies Lab and Contemporary Art Lab, the Liverpool Biennial, TATE Liverpool and more.

Itinerant, low-residency
Critical hubs for events and exchange, intensive, in-person residencies are the heart of Transart’s approach. Residencies are both milestones and resources where students present research, participate in topic-based workshops, artist talks, lectures, somatic sessions, walk-shops, symposia, colloquia, exhibitions and performances. Connect with local art communities by visiting artist studios, exhibitions, screenings and performances. Residencies also include individual and group critiques with established artists, curators, writers, philosophers and theorists, as well as time for independent and collective research. Transart members are encouraged to collectively or individually organize exhibitions, screenings, performances, publications, conference, talks, listening sessions and other events.

Upcoming residencies in Berlin, Liverpool, New York and Mexico City.

Expansive, interdisciplinary approach
Transart creative researchers think and work across diverse practices, research constellations, theoretical concerns and ways of knowing. We support creative research from within and beyond the arts, or at the intersection of multiple fields, practices and territories.

Situated research, global community
Exhibit, present, screen or publish internationally to a global community of peers and publics, while also deepening your engagement with your local community; practicing, researching, presenting and thinking with the specificity of where you live and work. Transart supports moving towards generative ecologies of knowledge throughout the world, on and offline.

One focused year, ongoing sustainable praxis
One year to slow down and pay attention to your practice, to sink more deeply into your process and give yourself the dedicated time and support to fully explore your research question or project. Optionally transition into the PhD program with guidance towards developing a proposal. Integrated practice/theory workshops, research training, artist talks, lectures, somatic sessions, collective research; individual and group critiques with established artists, writers, philosophers, theorists, mediators and curators; and project presentations in a variety of formats, all support you to hone your research so that you transition into your next phase with a nuanced, engaged and sustainable praxis.
