Beatriz Cortez is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores simultaneity, life in different temporalities, and different versions of modernity. Her work is currently on view at the Pitzer College Art Galleries, Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego North, and Smithsonian Institution Art + Industries Building. Cortez is the spring quarter teaching artist in residence in The California Studio: Manetti Shrem Artist Residencies at UC Davis. Co-sponsored by the Manetti Shrem Museum of Art.
Ann Hamilton and Michael Mercil: The California Studio

Ann Hamilton is a visual artist internationally recognized for her large-scale multimedia installations, public projects, and performance collaborations. Michael Mercil is a visual artist whose work interrogates quotidian experience and biological cycles through sculpture, drawing, painting, landscape architecture, film, performance, and farming. In 2005, they began The Living Culture Initiative, a project that explores the intersection of art and the agricultural sciences at The Ohio State University. Both have exhibited extensively internationally. Hamilton and Mercil are the spring quarter spotlight artists in residence in The California Studio: Manetti Shrem Artist Residencies at UC Davis.
Wangechi Mutu: The Betty Jean and Wayne Thiebaud Endowed Lecture Series

Wangechi Mutu is an internationally renowned visual artist whose work is rooted in advocacy and questions of representation. Mutu’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco Legion of Honor. Co-sponsored by the Manetti Shrem Museum.
Connie Butler: Visiting Artist Lecture Series

Connie Butler is the chief curator at the Hammer Museum at UCLA in Los Angeles. Butler has long been interested in feminism and art, curating numerous shows on women artists. In 2020, Butler received a fellowship from the Center for Curatorial Leadership and the Bard College Audrey Irmas Award for Curatorial Excellence. Co-sponsored by the Manetti Shrem Museum.

Art Studio at UC Davis challenges students to cultivate curiosity and sustain the courage to embrace the unknown through art. Arts students at the undergraduate and graduate level are encouraged to explore a broad range of disciplines and to participate in opportunities outside the classroom, including the Visiting Artist Lecture Series, the Betty Jean and Wayne Thiebaud Lecture Series, The California Studio: Manetti Shrem Artist Residencies, professional practice seminars, student exhibitions, competitions and internships. The department supports 16 fully funded MFA students and attracts students from all over the United States and the world.
