A programme of performances inspired by Bruce Nauman
Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana presents “Dancing Studies,” a series of performances inspired by the work of Bruce Nauman and created by internationally-renowned choreographers: William Forsythe, Lenio Kaklea, Pam Tanowitz and Ralph Lemon.
Carlos Basualdo and Caroline Bourgeois, curators of the exhibition Bruce Nauman: Contrapposto Studies at Punta della Dogana, invited the four choreographers to develop a project to be presented in Venice from April to June 2022.
From April 2-3 and from April 7–10

William Forsythe presents “MANUAL LABORS,” an event consisting of two parts including live performances and screenings, and the premiere of “PARAPHRASE,” a new performance developped specifically for the occasion by the choreographer with interpreters of Italian Sign Languages in the rooms of the Bruce Nauman exhibition at Punta della Dogana.

Sonatas and Interludes by Lenio Kaklea
Lenio Kaklea performs a duet with pianist Orlando Bass inspired by what is considered one of John Cage’s most significant pieces, “Sonatas and Interludes.” The choreographer offers an unprecedented perspective on her work, which is characterised by the use of different media with influences from feminist theory and institutional critique.
From May 1–5
Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi
Dancing the Studio by Pam Tanowitz
Inspired by Bruce Nauman’s work and his emphasis on process-over-product, Pam Tanowitz’s new dance installation “Dancing the Studio” removes the boundaries between process and performance, the rehearsal and the performance becoming one and the same. Pam Tanowitz, the designer Jeremy Jacob and six of Tanowitz’s dancers transform the Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi in a dance studio.
From June 16–19
COSMO, Campo San Cosmo, Giudecca
In Proximity by Ralph Lemon
Ralph Lemon has produced a new work comprising multiple fragments developed over the course of many years of research into movement, text and sound. A collection of actions with the potential to evoke some of Bruce Nauman’s works on display at Punta della Dogana.
Part of the costumes for the performances of Lenio Kaklea and the costumes for the performances of Pam Tanowitz are designed by Matthieu Blazy for Bottega Veneta, partner of Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana for this program.
The cycle “Dancing Studies” is supported by Bottega Veneta.
