Each summer, the School of the Arts welcomes students of all ages and levels of artistic experience to Columbia’s campus in New York City.
The Visual Arts Summer Intensives are six-week, six-credit workshops based on the elements and structure of Columbia University’s Visual Arts MFA degree program. These hands-on workshops provide individual and group feedback to challenge and advance students’ work in an immersive and nurturing environment. Our Intensive courses are geared towards students who aim to develop new ideas and approaches in their artwork and also those who wish to develop an outstanding portfolio appropriate for MFA program applications. Each intensive course will be held daily Monday to Friday, May 23–July 1, from 10am to 6pm.
Advanced Painting Intensive
Instructors: Gregory Amenoff, Michael Berryhill.
The Advanced Painting Intensive mentors a group of up to twelve students through individual and group critique, technical tutorials, exposure to the New York gallery and museum worlds, and lectures and critiques by nationally known visiting artists. This workshop includes a seminar in professional practices for artists and a seminar in key readings about contemporary art. Each student works in an individual studio space with 24-hour access.
Students interested in the Advanced Painting Intensive must submit a portfolio of ten images of their work. You must also include a Statement of Intent that is up to 500 words with your educational background, including degrees and independent courses, and your reasons for applying to the program. Accepted students can register for the course upon notification.
Advanced Printmaking Intensive
Instructors: Tomas Vu-Daniel, Jennifer Nuss, Nathan Catlin, Craig Zammiello.
The Printmaking Intensive will focus on teaching students new/traditional printmaking techniques and developing skills on all levels. Students and professionals will have access to all printmaking techniques, but will focus on their primary area of interest. Through the course, students will have the opportunity to visit artist’s studios and prime New York print shops. They will also be exposed to the inner workings of the publishing operation of the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies at Columbia University.
Other courses in Drawing, Painting, Photography, and Silkscreen will also be offered this summer. For more information and to apply, visit our Summer Programs website. If you have questions, email summersessions [at] columbia.edu.
