Research in art & design education and community practices
What is the significance of material practices and the visceral aspect of embodiment for artistic research and education in the current era of social distancing and digital conferencing? How do we relate to distance, nearness, care, embodiment, communality and performativity in education? How can we develop an art-driven, critical pedagogy within secondary education? What are the main challenges when it comes to forging transdisciplinary connections between the arts and sciences in education? How do we look at art mediation from the perspective of sustainability and diversity? How do pivotal topics in our current circumstances—like the climate crisis, intersectionality and decolonialization—influence our view on education in the future?
Would you like to do in-depth research on a question of your own choosing within a collective learning community? If so, the Master of Education in Arts at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, might be something for you. We are a two-year part-time research Master programme, specifically developed for working professionals or educators in an early phase of their career. Participants in our course design, test and experiment with pedagogical models and tactics, as well as doing critical research on them. We are a learning community driven by peer feedback, centred around a curriculum of intensive seminars and an educational philosophy in which theory and practice are intrinsically related.
Our programme has an interdisciplinary focus and strives to be in tune with a society in which institutional educational environments (schools, academies, museums) and informal public settings (workshops, labs, et cetera) work hand-in-hand. We therefore welcome motivated and engaged practitioners from the fields of higher art/design education, vocational and secondary education, as well as museum educators or practitioners interested in participatory/community practices. We focus additional attention on contemporary issues in education such as critical/feminist pedagogy, post-human education philosophy, critical making, trans-disciplinarity and community practices.
Our course is taught in English and accepts students from the Netherlands and abroad (within the EU). For an overview of our programme, staff and guest teachers, please visit our website.

Institutional context
The Piet Zwart Institute houses the international Master programmes of the Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. The institute is named after the Dutch designer Piet Zwart who worked experimentally across different media and contexts. The different programmes offer a rich combination of in-depth specialization and transdisciplinary exchange with a view to imagining the future. Students and tutors bring a variety of languages, perspectives and cultural influences to an intimate learning environment. Aware of this embeddedness and wider environment.
Annual open day and open information meetings
Our annual open day will take place on February 12, 2022. We warmly welcome everybody interested in the programme to participate. The course director will give a presentation about the programme, after which there will be time for a Q & A with tutors and students.
