Phileas is a philanthropic organisation based in Vienna, that enables ambitious projects within the field of contemporary art. Its primary focus lies on the production of new works by Austrian and Austrian-based artists, and their exhibition at international museums and Biennials.

Phileas runs an active Visitor Programme, inviting international curators, art critics and museum groups to Austria throughout the year to visit artists’ studios, museums, galleries, and foundations. For more information, please contact visit [at] phileasprojects.org.
In May 2022, Phileas will open a public exhibition space in the heart of Vienna. Located in an historical building on the Ringstrasse, it will present several exhibitions each year drawn from the projects by Austrian and Austrian-based artists that Phileas co-produces at Biennials and museums around the world. The inaugural exhibition, opening in early May 2022, will be a collaboration with the Austrian Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale. Exactly two weeks after the opening in Venice, a presentation conceived and produced in parallel by artists Ashley Hans Scheirl and Jakob Lena Knebl will open in Vienna. The exhibition, titled ‘Soft Machine’, will present the work of Scheirl and Knebl alongside that of their students from the Contextual Painting class at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, and the Transmedia Art class at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, respectively. A programme of live public events will accompany the exhibition.
Phileas has also recently launched a new series of annual publications. The ‘First Monographs’ are intended to introduce the work of the most promising emerging Austrian and Austrian-based artists, beginning in Spring 2022 with the photographer Sophie Thun. Her monograph will include contributions by Lucy Gallun, Associate Curator in the Department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York; Catherine Wood, Curator of Contemporary Art and Performance, Tate, London; Lisa Long, curator at Julia Stoschek Collection, Düsseldorf and Berlin; and an interview with Charlotte Cotton, independent curator and writer. It will be published by DISTANZ, with graphic design by Marie Artaker.
