The DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program proudly announces its fellows for 2022, 19 outstanding practitioners in the fields of visual arts, film, literature, and music. The DAAD fellows will reside in Berlin for up to a year to work on projects relevant to their trajectories as artists and engage in collaborations in the city.
The 2022 fellows include visual artists Patricia Belli, MADEYOULOOK (Molemo Moiloa & Nare Mokgotho), Tuli-Mekondjo, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, and Zoncy Heavenly; filmmakers Burak Çevik, Paula Maria Gaitán, and Shireen Seno; writers Anuk Arudpragasam, Jay Bernard, Volha Hapeyeva, Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi, Maaza Mengiste and Faruk Šehić; and composers/sound artists Merche Blasco, Nandita Kumar, Elaine Mitchener and Bárbara Lázara.
Due to the disruptions created by the pandemic, the 2022 fellows will overlap with 2021 artists-in-residence still in town: visual artists Olivia Botha, Guerreiro do Divino Amor, Shadi Habib Allah, Nontsikelelo Mutiti, Pallavi Paul, and Supaparinya Sutthirat; filmmaker Anna Zamecka; writers Taqi Akhlaqi, Miguel Bonnefoy, Athena Farrokhzad, Francesca Melandri, Fernanda Melchor and Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor; as well as composer/sound artists Robert Machiri & Memory Biwa, Yara Mekawei, and Zsolt Sőrés.
Established in 1963, the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program is one of the most renowned residency programs for international cultural practitioners. Its versatile venue, the daadgalerie located in Berlin-Kreuzberg, operates both as a site for presenting exhibitions as well as concerts, readings, talks, and screenings, allowing artists to test out their ideas and imaginations.
In 2022, the public program kicks off with an exhibition by Albertina Carri, a 2021 film fellow of the Artists-in-Berlin Program. In Cine puro, the Argentine filmmaker and multifaceted artist breaks apart the medium of film into its essential elements to lay the foundations of a cinema after cinema.
Further projects for 2022 are planned with sound artist Yara Mekawei, visual artists Zinny & Maidagan and Jingban Hao. Interdisciplinary event series, screenings, publications and readings will provide insight into the artistic endeavors developed during the fellows´ residency in Berlin.
Collaborative program partners include: SAVVY Contemporary, Temporary Gallery Cologne, Arsenal – Institute for Film and Video Art, internationales literaturfestival berlin, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research as well as the Ultraschall and MaerzMusik festivals. The DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program has joined the city of Berlin´s initiative “Weltoffenes Berlin” as a partner of ICORN, the International Cities of Refuge Network.
The DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program is funded by the German Foreign Office and the Senate of Berlin.
