Quartz Studio presents Artist on Collecting, a series of videos about collecting by artists. The series aims to study an aspect of the mental landscape as human beings, revealing implications inherent in the creative act.
The concept behind “Artist on Collecting” started with evidence that collecting is at the foundation of visual investigation, considered as a process of selection, care and the creation of relationships between objects, with their generative ability to produce ideas. The project aims to document different experiences, with the hope of reaching a greater understanding of the themes of collecting by artists and contemporary art. The videos convey the perspectives of Italian and international artists in their studios.
In collaboration with the Collezione Maramotti of Reggio Emilia, four videos were made about artists from the Collection: Enoc Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1967), Matthew Day Jackson (Panorama City, Los Angeles, 1974) and TARWUK (Ivana Vukšić, Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, 1981 and Bruno Pogačnik Tremow, Zagreb, Yugoslavia, 1981), filmed in New York by filmmaker Anne Marie Taylor (Newport Beach, U.S., 1990) and a video about Mark Manders (Volkel, The Netherlands, 1968), by director Griet Teck (Bruges, Belgium, 1982) in the artist’s studio in Ronse, Belgium.
The series consists of videos about Jonathan Monk (Leicester, Great Britain, 1968), whose film was made in Berlin by the filmmaker Sebastian Krügler (Darmstadt, Germany, 1975). By the same filmmaker are other videos about Isa Melsheimer (Neuss, Germany, 1968), Gernot Wieland (Horn, Austria, 1968), Adrien Missika (Paris, France, 1981), Sarah Ancelle Schönfeld (1979, Berlin, Germany) and Katja Kublitz for Yarisal & Kublitz (Ronnie Yarisal, Geneva, Switzerland, 1981 and Katja Kublitz, Copenhagen, Denmark, 1978). After these interviews were ones with Lihi Turjeman (Tel-Aviv, Israel, 1985), Giovanni Kronenberg (Milan, Italy, 1974) and Salvatore Arancio (Catania, Italy, 1974) filmed between Turin, Milan and Nice by director Giuseppe Bisceglia (Cosenza, Italy, 1985). In Vienna, the filmmaker Tomas Eller (Merano, Italy, 1975) filmed interviews in their studios with the artists Andreas Fogarasi (Vienna, Austria, 1977) and Martina Steckholzer (Vipiteno, Italy, 1975).
The 15 artists interviewed open new perspectives on their work by telling us about their experiences with collecting.
The videos are posted on YouTube and on social channels (Facebook and Instagram).
