One night around 1982 or 83, I landed in a ground floor space on Rivington Street, just off the Bowery. I had no place to go and the girl living there, Kimberly, very kindly offered me to stay until I found a new house. The place had black walls and she told me that soon she would be opening that space as an art gallery. Kimberly wore her high heel stilettos even in the shower as well as her bloody red lipstick. A gallery with black walls was certainly something-unusual especially for a neophyte like me. I asked her if the gallery had a name, she told me it would be called Spiritual America, under suggestion of Richard Prince.
The term Spiritual America has always been stuck in my mind, I decided to exorcise it by doing a show. And this is the result; an assemblage of what I believe represents some of the past and present American spirit.
