DE APPEL PRESENTS DARREN ALMOND
From 16 June through 12 August 2001, De Appel will devote a solo presentation to Darren Almond, a young artist who works with video, sculpture and real-time works. Almond’s investigation of time, space and the body seems to be based on a single underlying theme: the instrumentalized human subject. Apart from new work, Darren Almond will present ‘Oswiecim’ (1997): a sculpture consisting of replicas of the bus stops near the Auschwitz concentration camp, which bear witness to waiting, being transported, working, getting injured, extermination and commemoration. Traction’ (1998/1999) is a video triptych about his parents in which the mother is the silent but emotional witness of the injuries sustained by the father, whose work as a building demolisher is attested by the scars on his body.
Darren Almond will be mounting his exhibition in Amsterdam from 12 to 16 June, and will be attending the opening of his exhibition on Friday 15 June at 18.00 hrs.
