IN TRANSFER—A New Condition

Esch2022—European Capital of Culture presents IN TRANSFER—A New Condition, a group exhibition organised in collaboration with Ars Electronica.

The Möllerei in Esch-Belval is the starting point of our story and a monument of a world order in transition. This former steelwork has been turned into a place for culture and art. The surrounding industrial area right on the border of Luxemburg and France is becoming a new district, a place for people. It is about transformation and change. The exhibition IN TRANSFER—A New Condition approaches these concepts and explores the nature of change with a selection of works by artists operating at the intersection of art, technology and society.

How can we recognise change not as compromise, provocation, or personal limitation, but as quality, skill, and empowerment? Can art play a role in this? Certainly not in the sense of overall responsibility. But art can offer a space, in which change in its contradictory complexity can be experienced. Art and culture can thus represent an offer to society, an artistic, social laboratory in which reality and the future are simulated. In this way, it offers a space of experience that takes on the issues that force us to make fundamental changes, but which also has the quality of being a guide for change itself.

The exhibition is commissioned by Esch2022—European Capital of Culture. It is curated by Ars Electronica and accompanied by a programme of public events, including guided tours and workshops.
A catalogue published by Hatje Cantz will be released in Autumn 2022.

IN TRANSFER—A New Condition is the last of three large scale group exhibitions that encourage critical reflection on art, science, technology and society. They are organised in collaboration with the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, HEK (House of Electronic Arts) and Ars Electronica and are presented in the Möllerei, a listed building formerly used for storing the raw materials in the process of steelmaking.
