The Institute of Arts and Society at the University of Applied Arts Vienna invites applicants for Cross-Disciplinary Strategies. Applied Studies in Art, Science, Philosophy and Global Challenges (CDS). These English language BA and MA programs offer students the opportunity to critically engage with current societal challenges in a multidisciplinary setting, linking the approaches and methodologies of art, the humanities, and social and natural sciences. In this sense, the program is a reaction to the increasing fragmentation of academic disciplines, aiming to face up to 21st-century challenges. Artistic strategies and approaches to art are our common disciplinary language. Interested students can learn more about our program and university here.
Want to find out more? Visit our digital open house and speak with current students and faculty! Bachelor of Arts (BA)
8 Semesters, 240 ECTS / English language competence (B2, CEFR) / Application deadline: January 28, 2022.
Over the last years, the CDS BA program has developed into a strongly practice-oriented education that prepares students for critical engagement with major scientific, technological, and social issues arising from an interconnected and contested global world.
Annual topics focus the course offerings across study areas and create a common discourse with opportunities for mutual learning across student years. The annual topics foreground pressing debates including migration, work, growth, the environment, nutrition, and the possibilities and consequences of AI and Big Data. Through applied projects, students receive substantial and cumulative training in the practical implementation of scientific and artistic works that are richly informed by theory and grounded in appropriate methods.
Master of Arts (MA)
4 semesters, 120 ECTS / English language competence (B2, CEFR) / Application deadline: January 28, 2022.
The master’s program promotes work on transdisciplinary projects for sustainable social change and a cross-disciplinary approach to digital technologies and the transformation processes associated with them. Students learn to situate their topics in a broader societal context and, in addition, to communicate them using a range of methods and artistic strategies and to apply these in participative projects. For these projects, dialogue and collaboration with actors of civil society, art, science, politics, and the economy are supported and promoted.
MA courses at CDS are organized into three study areas: Science and Technology, Economics and Politics, and Artistic Strategies. Within this cross-cutting curriculum, masters’ students are particularly sensitized to the epistemological foundations of knowledge systems and how to work effectively toward a socially and ecologically sustainable global future.
Applications
Applications for both programs include a written online application as well as a practical task and a personal interview. The online application for both the BA and MA degrees can be found here.
Angewandte‘s practice-related academic and artistic approach supports students in developing their individual practices and articulating their own critical perspectives. Through excursions, workshops, lectures, team-teaching, professional introductions, and close mentorship the CDS degree programs aim to prepare graduates for an independent role in working between and within global interests from different specialist backgrounds.
