LARS VON TRIER: eight or so water-damaged reflections excavated from a cave in upstate New York, Northern Southern France.
LARS VON TRIER is a collaboration between Gareth James and Gardar Eide Einarsson, consisting of sculpture, photography and drawing, derived from their confusion about an anecdote … told by a Danish friend … about Lars von Trier (the great living Danish filmmaker) … and the tuxedo of the great (dead) Danish filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer: Von Trier purchases Dreyer’s tux at auction, not to display reverentially in a finely crafted vitrine but for his own adornment at a Cannes premiere of one of his own films. With a mixture of horror, amusement, a desire for emulation as much as revenge, James and Einarsson indulge in a little necrophiliac post-science fiction, reanimating the mediatized body of LARS VON TRIER in the vain attempt to comprehend what happens when a Von Trier wears the symbolic body of a Dreyer.
