Online seminar, 4-5-6 November
November 4–6, 2021
Design as Collective Improvisation is an online seminar resulting from nearly a decade of collaboration between the University of Louvain in Belgium and PUC Valparaiso in Chile. Beginning in 2012, the two schools met at the Ciudad Abierta, an experimental architecture and sculpture site near Valparaiso, and in Brussels, reflecting on and practicing techniques of collective real-time design. Events in 2015, 2018, and 2019 have reflected this collaboration which has deepened over the years. The present seminar has the goal of developing some of the themes that have emerged from our work, and enlarging the dialog to include many others from several continents. We intend to follow the seminar with a publication.
Themes of the seminar include:
–1:1 scale experimentation
–co-designing / co-building
–relations between artistic creation and scientific research
–alternative education methods
–linear vs. circular temporality in design
Keynote speakers include:
Tim Ingold (UK), anthropologist and professor, and author notably of Making: Anthropology, Archaeology, Art and Architecture (2013)
Aslıhan Şenel (Turkey), architect and professor, author among others of “Mapping as Performance: An Alternative to Authoritative Representations of Istanbul” (2013)
Jilly Traganou (US), architect and professor, and author, among others, of Design and Political Dissent: Spaces, Visuals, Materialities (2020)
Mark West (Canada), artist and professor, and author notably of The Fabric Formwork Book (2016)
About two dozen selected speakers from various continents will present short presentations of projects and scholarly works in relation to the themes.
The program is available here.
