In his four decades as an artist Jorg Immendorff has always viewed painting as an analytical and critical method directed towards determining his own position in society. This exhibition presents a group of works assembled for the Rheingold collection. The 21 paintings gathered here extend from the period of political agitation at the end of the Seventies and start of the Eighties to the allegorical paintings from 1999 to 2002. The construction of an architectural element, a kind of platform where visitors can record their personal views about art and the world in general, and Jorg Immendorff’s paintings and exhibition in particular, serves this overview. This “Location for Criticism” is thus both the exhibition’s title and its function. It derives from a gouache dating from 1976 where Immendorff sketched a scenario now implemented for the first time as an action-area in this presentation. Not only the paintings on show can be seen from here; photographs of the artist’s entire oeuvre are also on show, open to critical scrutiny.
