Art Omi announces the appointment of Julia van den Hout as Art Omi’s Architecture Curator and Program Director following an extensive search.
“We are thrilled to be working with Julia van den Hout, who brings her rich experience as an architecture curator, writer and editor to this program, and we’re looking forward to her contribution to the growing reputation as a venue for architects to explore, create, and exchange ideas,” said Ruth Adams, Co-Executive Director of Art Omi.
Julia van den Hout is an architecture and design writer, editor, and curator, and the founder and principal of Original Copy. She previously served as Press Director at Steven Holl Architects, and she was a founding editor of CLOG, an international publication that critically explores one topic at a time from as many perspectives as possible. Van den Hout teaches at Pratt Institute’s Graduate School of Architecture, and is a member of the Exhibitions Committee at the Center for Architecture/AIA NY.
“I’m delighted to join Art Omi, an institution that champions architecture alongside other creative disciplines. I look forward to collaborating with the Art Omi team and its community of architects, artists and residents to promote creative and critical exchange, and to develop Art Omi: Architecture as a platform for engaging with contemporary issues and ideas in a way that lets the outside in,” said van den Hout.
At Art Omi, van den Hout will oversee the creation of architecture exhibitions and programming in the Sculpture & Architecture Park and indoor exhibition spaces. She will also lead the annual Art Omi: Architecture residency program, the first of its kind in the nation. The international program, which is currently accepting applications for its Summer 2022 cycle, provides architects a two-week residency to develop their work at Art Omi’s picturesque Ghent campus.
Art Omi: Architecture facilitates projects that explore the intersection of architecture, art, and landscape by architects. This unique program offers 60 acres to exhibit physical structures such as pavilions, installations, landscape interventions, and constructed environments designed by architects. Architects currently exhibited by Art Omi: Architecture include Cameron Wu, Wendy Evans Joseph, Yolande Daniels, LevenBetts, and Steven Holl.
Launched in 2017, the Art Omi: Architecture Residency has been described as “one of the world’s 11 most inspiring design residencies” by Artsy. The residency culminates in a critic-led presentation by the annual Guest Architecture Critic. Past Guest Architecture Critics include Alexandra Lange, Julie V. Iovine, Justin Davidson, and Cathleen McGuigan. Applications to the 2022 program are accepted at artomi.submittable.com through November 15, 2021 at 11:59 EST.
