Extra Extra is delighted to announce new audio adventures through extraextramagazine.com/listen. From the studio of NTS London, we broadcast The Protagonist of the Erotic—a new essayistic podcast series—as well as The Extra Extra Radio Show, which is set just to the left of reality in an imagined metropolis.
The Protagonist of the Erotic
Episode 1: Now online
Episode 2: Wednesday, November 17, 12:30pm (CEST)
The podcast series is dedicated, as an act of love, to the libidinal oeuvre of a living person, desired object or location that can be visited in the present day. Here, we discover what it means to define and shape sensuality framed by the dynamic context of modern urban life. For each instalment, Extra Extra invites curators, writers and researchers to share their reflections together with found footage—archival material, field recordings and music—alongside a stunning soundscape by The God in Hackney.
For the inaugural episode, ArkDes-curator James Taylor-Foster explores the idea of an island. Thrusting up amidst bodies of water, these liminal spaces glimmer with possibility. Recovering from a long illness that left him bedbound for weeks, he journeys across the urban island of Långholmen. Located in Sweden’s capital and known to be a historical cruising site, the rugged landscape of Långholmen brims with desire. The first instalment of our series belongs not only to Stockholm but also to another archipelago city—Venice. There, accompanied by the ebb and flow of the crowd, we are reminded of Luchino Visconti’s iconic 1971 film, Death in Venice. Between these two islands, rock formations transform into interlocking figures pleasuring each other, the surroundings becoming charged with erotic potential.
Sensitivity, tenderness and refinement come together in The Protagonist of the Erotic, which contemplates reality and in which the listener is equally instructed, seduced and moved. Engage in a deep, immersive experience whereby a textual reading is animated through sound, bringing to life the sensorial storytelling of the narrator. The upcoming episodes will feature curators and writers from our unrivalled network, including Fatos Üstek, Adam Kleinman and Nicholas Elliott.
The Extra Extra Radio Show
Episode 9: Friday, November 12, 12:30pm (CEST)
Broadcast from The City, a place located out of the corner of your eye, one click to the left of reality, The Extra Extra Radio Show is a bi-monthly radio series devised by writer Dan Fox and performance artist Michael Portnoy, with music curated by graphic designer Loes Verstappen. The show is a guide, a sonic map of a metropolis that harvests and powers itself on the pheromones, lust, hankerings, pent-up needs and desires of its denizens. Each episode explores a different aspect of life there with the host, Michael, speaking to an array of guests, inhabitants of The City, about work and play, love and loss, and the mysterious ways they have found to negotiate the erotic energies that sway their lives
In the upcoming Episode 9, Michael finds himself cast adrift, many nautical miles away from The City. A motley band of sailors—who just-so-happen to be avid fans of The Extra Extra Radio Show—come to the rescue. Onboard their ship, The Neptune’s Throuple, we become acquainted with the crew’s taste for frothy cappuccinos, camembert crostini, seafaring in the nude and less than conventional fishing methods. Meanwhile, a pair of foul-mouthed seagulls deliver hilarious quips about human reproductive organs.
These formats present stories of the now for an audience of the now, centralising the interaction between cities worldwide, and the possibilities and impossibilities of physical proximity. Extra Extra’s online programme forms an alternative vocabulary for listeners to experience the city, moving from lust and ecstasy, to dirt and danger to playfulness.
Platform Extra Extra is generously supported by Creative Industries Fund and the city of Rotterdam. The online programme is realised in partnership with Mondriaan Fund and Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds.
