Gather this November to build resilience and dream together.
For the first time, Common Field is proud to assemble a national cohort of curatorial partners to organize its annual Convening around a central theme: Sustaining Futures. Emerging in response to a need for reflection, solidarity, and sharing in this time, Sustaining Futures provides a framework for addressing where we’ve been and how we commit to our values today, and in the future. From care sessions and workshops to panels and sound experiences, the online 2021 Convening program features contributions from individuals and organizations exploring, experimenting with, and imagining new ways of being, living, and working creatively.
Common Field’s 2021 Convening partners reflect a broad range of places, identities, scales, and focus—and all work in intentional and reflective ways to build what’s needed for the road ahead. 2021 partners include AS220 (Providence, Rhode Island), Center for Afrofuturist Studies (Iowa City, Iowa), Martina Dodd (Atlanta, Georgia), Racing Magpie (Rapid City, South Dakota), S Rodriguez (Dallas, Texas), and Wide Awakes (Global). This group curated and developed the shape of this year’s program, including a new fellowship initiative, care spaces, and a number of panels, workshops, and other sessions. Alongside presenters selected via a juried open call for sessions from the Network, Common Field is proud to bring these national voices together in dialog with you this year.
Common Field is also proud to offer 2021 Convening tickets on a self-selecting sliding scale, with prices ranging from 5 to 50 USD, allowing you to choose the ticket price that works best for you. All tickets receive the same level of access to the program, and the first 800 attendees registered by Friday, October 15, 2021 will receive this year’s signature Marquee Project: a mailed packet of curated printed matter and other contributions from partners and Network members, including an interactive Convening Workbook, the annual Convening Publication, and additional items meant to add a physical dimension to your virtual experience.

Throughout this year’s program, Common Field is committed to making the Convening as accessible as possible for all participants. In addition to a Support Grant program that will provide recipients with financial support to attend, this year’s Convening will also offer real-time captioning and ASL interpretation for every session.

Common Field is a national Network of independent visual arts organizations and cultural workers and practitioners that connects, supports, and advocates for the artist-centered field. Initiated as collective work in 2013 and developed as an organization in 2017, Common Field supports a Network membership of more than 800 members across the country. Common Field supports the independent arts and culture field through national convenings, grants, research, resources, forums, meet-ups, and advocacy work. Its vision is to build platforms and advance ways of thinking that support diversity in identity, geography, history, orientation, perspective, and circumstance, thereby creating space for many people to enter and shape the field.
