Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) invites applications for full-time faculty positions beginning August 1, 2022. The College seeks dynamic and innovative candidates for the following one-year positions.
Graduate studies
Practicum Coordinator, MA in Teaching: The ideal candidate is an educator with demonstrated expertise in clinical supervision and curricular innovation, knowledge of systemic issues relevant to PK-12 arts education, a passion for building relationships with diverse students, and an interest in nurturing school partnerships throughout the Baltimore-Washington D.C. metropolitan area. The Practicum Coordinator will lead the administrative responsibilities associated with school-based internships and teach coursework central to internship experiences.
Undergraduate studies
Animation: MICA’s Animation Department is a dynamic, interdisciplinary program, committed to helping students find their personal creative voice while preparing for professional careers as leaders and innovators in arts and industry. Along with 2D traditional animation skills, the successful candidate should possess knowledge of post-production, installation, and off-screen applications that will support and diversify our collaborative, project-centered curriculum. We are specifically interested in candidates who can speak to multiple intersections of diversity, equity and inclusion. The successful candidate will engage with processes and workflows that reflect a transnational cultural exchange.
Game Design, one-year special contract with potential for renewal for up to 3 years: We are seeking candidates who are capable of teaching courses ranging from introductory non-digital game courses to digital game development courses using the Unity game engine. We welcome applicants from a broad spectrum of creative disciplines related to games, from commercial AAA and independent game development, to experimental interdisciplinary art practices which explore/use/interrogate games. Regardless of the discipline, we are interested in applicants who are excited to work with a new generation of innovative game designers, and who can draw on their professional work to create engaging and effective educational experiences for our students.
Sciences of the Environment in Humanistic Studies: The successful candidate will help advance and diversify MICA’s Liberal Arts curriculum, particularly in a new interdisciplinary major in Ecosystems, Sustainability, and Justice. Scholars in ecosystems ecology, climatology, biogeography, the biological sciences, and allied fields are encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching investigate climate change or environmental destruction and their intersections with social inequality.
Social Practice in First Year Experience (FYE): The First Year Experience (FYE) at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) seeks applications for a full-time, renewable appointment of Social Practice with local, national, and/or global reach. The successful candidate will help advance and diversify MICA’s FYE curriculum and serve the socially aware and concerned first year student population. Those active in community engagement, art activism, and social design are all encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested in candidates whose social practice intersects with our college’s Diversity Equity Inclusion Globalization (DEIG) goals and help foster creative citizenship in our students. The candidate is also expected to demonstrate digital fluency in practice and teaching with a particular focus on design, new media or immersive technology in order to teach studio and media courses across the first-year program.
Sound Design in Animation: MICA’s Animation Department is a dynamic, interdisciplinary program, committed to helping students find their personal creative voice while preparing for professional careers as leaders and innovators in arts and industry. We are seeking an interdisciplinary Sound Design specialist with experience working with moving image as applied to a variety of platforms. The successful candidate will teach sound design for students studying moving image primarily in the animation and film departments and other related disciplines. The candidate should also possess knowledge in film and video, media studies, post-production, installation, and off-screen applications that will support and diversify our collaborative, project-centered curriculum.
Visual Print Culture in Art History, Theory, and Criticism: We are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching investigates the construction and consequences of intersecting social categories or foregrounds the voices of underrepresented historical agents and authors. The successful candidate will engage with global flows and processes of cultural exchange, address popular culture, and/or advance critical approaches to canons in visual studies. The successful candidate will also be enthusiastic about teaching graduate MFA/MA students, as well as studio, humanities and art history majors, and will engage in innovative modes of instruction.
