Film as Muse
October 15–December 5, 2021
Exhibitions open on Friday October 15, 2021, 8pm
Cinematic masterpieces often impact artists, sometimes even inspiring artworks. Film as Muse explores this relationship, and presents film, video, photography, sculpture, painting, installations and an online program. This research project has resulted in the presentation of artwork by fifteen international artists, each making a particular or peculiar reference to specific films. Film as Muse, not unlike The People’s Cinema (2016), reflects upon creative and obsessive relationships between cinema and contemporary visual art in different manifestations. The exhibition posits itself as an initial step into researching and presenting contemporary art as it engages with cinema as its muse.
Artists: Joseph Beuys, Johanna Billing, Monica Bonvicini , Oisin Byrne, Hugo Canoilas, Loretta Fahrenholz, Anna Franceschini, Johan Grimonprez, Kristan Horton, Agnieszka Kurant, John Menick, Adrian Paci, Daniel Steegmann Mangrané, Ana Vaz & Tristan Bera
Curated by: Séamus Kealy (Director, Salzburger Kunstverein), Adam Budak (Director, Kestner Gesellschaft Hannover), Bernardo José de Souza (Curator, Madrid)

Elliott Mickleburgh: XX.XX.XX (Under the Scene)
October 15–December 5, 2021
The 2021 SpallArt Prize Salzburg Award winner presents new work.
XX.XX.XX is a project that interprets the Annunciation through the eclectic materials that emerge during the production and representation of luxury commodities. By reworking this story of religious devotion through the stylized languages of fashion, XX.XX.XX explores the intersection between a longing for the ineffable and the lust for self-gratification. Elliott Mickleburgh (b. 1990, Seattle) lives and works in London.

October Talks & November Films
Each autumn, we present October Talks, a lecture series on art and culture by artists, historians, curators and philosophers. This year, we have added three evenings of November Films, a series of film screenings to complement the exhibition, Film as Muse.
The first talk is an introduction to Film as Muse by Séamus Kealy, Adam Budak, and Bernardo de Souza (Friday, October 15). The second talk is by Ila Bêka & Louise Lemoine with a screening of their film Koolhaas Houselife (Tuesday, October 19). The third talk is by the German art historian Julia Meier (Thursday, October 28) and the fourth talk is by the Belgian artist Johan Grimonprez (Saturday, October 30), who also exhibits in Film as Muse.
November Films commences and ends with screenings by pioneering and radical women film-makers, namely Maya Deren, Barbara Hammer and Lucrecia Martel (Thursday, November 18), and Larisa Shepitko and Vera Chytilová (Tuesday, November 30). An artist talk and film screening by Loretta Fahrenholz, who is also participating in Film As Muse, is situated between these screenings (Thursday, November 25th). All events commence at 7pm and are free entry.
