Applications are now open for the graduate programs in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Design at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. Apply here.
As part of a tier-one research institution, the Sam Fox School’s Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design provides a rigorous academic environment where students develop a love of craft and the ability to move fluidly between digital and analog platforms. Our design studios in architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design are organized around cumulative, collective experiences. We focus on design, environmental ethics, historical and global perspectives, innovation, and technological fluency, providing students with experiences that will allow them to be leaders in their fields. Through critical thinking, research, and cutting-edge programs, we give students the means to improve our world.
Curriculum
Our STEM-designated MArch, MLA, and MUD programs center around four areas of expertise: discipline-based design practice, technology and the arts, social engagement, and resilient cities. Within our MArch program, we offer a 3-year curriculum as well as a 2-year curriculum for advanced students. You can earn a dual degree between programs within the School or a joint degree in business administration, computer science, public health, social work, or construction management. We also offer a Master of Science in Architectural Studies (MSAS) and a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design (MSAAD).

Faculty
Our core faculty have pioneered research in building technology, cultural arts, housing, history, and urban sustainability. Each semester, we engage with architects, designers, and researchers from around the world. Through lectures, workshops, and studio instruction, you’ll learn firsthand from global leaders in their field. Our graduate programs are led by Mónica Rivera (chair, graduate architecture) and Derek Hoeferlin (chair, landscape architecture + urban design).
Facilities
Weil Hall, our brand-new, LEED Platinum-certified building, is a hub for our graduate programs. With loft-style studios, it provides ready access to numerous resources and spaces for making, including a digital fabrication studio, textile design studio, digital media labs, a lighting studio, wood and metal shops, and more. Through our weekly Fox Fridays workshop series, students can explore new processes, tools, and materials to develop hybridized practices of creative output that transcend discipline, medium, and experience. Our graduate studios are adjacent to the School’s Kranzberg Art & Architecture Library and the recently expanded Kemper Art Museum, which has a world-class permanent collection and hosts major exhibitions by today’s leading artists and designers.
Engaging with the region
St. Louis is a place of unprecedented access—and one of the most affordable, culturally exciting cities with which to engage. The St. Louis region offers a fertile ecological and experimental terrain for resilient design and research. Each semester we address critical issues in race, ethnicity, and diversity through our Office for Socially Engaged Practice.
Scholarships and financial aid
We offer competitive scholarships and financial support, as well as specialized opportunities for travel and research. Our newest program, the Sam Fox Ambassadors Graduate Fellowship, awards an additional 10 full-tuition scholarships each year to outstanding candidates.
