Marc Quinn´s sculpture The Overwhelming World of Desire was part of the Statements 7 exhibition, presented by Dornbracht on the occasion of the 50th Biennale di Venezia in 2003. The exhibition was dedicated to the physicality of and in art, and showed sculptural works by the three artists Steven Gontarski, Marc Quinn and Thomas Rentmeister. The sculpture by Marc Quinn, a 12-metre-high orchid, was displayed on the Canale Grande, Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Now the sculpture has been erected on a specially built artificial island in the Seilersee, Iserlohn.
Marc Quinns work is called The Overwhelming World of Desire (Phragmipedium Sedenii). The 12-metre-high orchid is the continuation of the series of frozen flower sculptures from Eternal Spring to Garden 2000. Although Quinn originally used real flowers and in a certain sense dematerialised them by freezing them, thereby effectively giving them eternal life, the orchid in his Statements contribution is returned to the real world as an image. With its almost vulgar beauty and put on public display, the orchid becomes the embodiment of our own desires. Positioned close to the banks of the Seilersee, the busy hustle and bustle of the people is given an insect-like dimension by the exceptional physical presence of the orchid, thereby creating an association to the overwhelming world of desire.
As part of the Statements series, Dornbracht, international manufacturer of designer fittings, has been presenting since 1997 internationally renowned artists, photographers, writers, musicians and designers and invited them to create free interpretations on the subject of Water, cleansing and rituals. The Statements projects are displayed in international exhibitions and documented in high quality catalogues. The Statements exhibition series is curated and designed by NEO NOTO Mike Meiré, Cologne.
