An exploration of the CNAP’s film collections and an homage to Alexander Kluge
An elastic, shape-memory work in a state of perpetual transformation, Chronicle of Feelings – Tome 2 – The Uncanniness of Time by Alexander Kluge lays out forms of resistance. Throughout Kluge’s oeuvre, instability, strangeness and uneasiness unceasingly “emerge” as the principal motif. Chronicle of Feelings – The Uncanniness of Time bears cinematic and literary reflections, concentrating Kluge’s entire creation around the figure of life courses.
Essays, enquiries, and the texts constitute here reflexive counterpoints to the films of the collection of The National Center for Visual Arts (Centre national des arts plastiques), among thousands of audiovisual works. They question the double perspective of the Uncanniness of The Time, as well as how to make history with the images, putting in perspective view multiple acts de resistances, questionning the counter-history, the critical time-archive or the essay as a documentary form. This edited compendium is designed—as the whole film collection—like an object for researchs on the present works and their histories, a model for research programmes destined to researchers and artists and the potentiality of a prototype exhibition.

For its first occurrence, proposed by Pascale Cassagnau, the programme Uncanniness of The Times gave rise to an online and on-site exhibition at The Maubuisson Abbey (Ile de France Region), April 24–August 29, 2021, where the 60 films drawn from the CNAP’s films collection all inspired by Alexander Kluge works.

A free hand invitation given to Alexander Kluge, through a Cnap public order with the partnership of France- culture, inside the programme L’Expérience produced by Aurélie Charon. This radiophonic creation replaces the question of Uncanniness of the Times as well in the history of the 20th century ideas as in an autobiographic perspective.

Invited by the radio collectif DUUU, a radio set, following by screenings of Alexander Kluge et Paul Grivas films, will take place at the Folie n°4 / Parc de la Villette, on Monday, August, which topics will be the relationships between graphism and cinema, the essai-shape, in Alexander Kluge’s works and in their readings by contemporary artists.

A second occurrence of the programme Uncanniness of The Times will take place in Toulouse, invited by the festival Printemps de septembre, October 6–17. Here, the proposal reconsiders the Uncanniness through the question of Our Heritages, gathering works from the Cnap Collections drawing a gai savoir for the present, questionning figures of emancipation, putting in view bountiful acts of acts of transmission, learning, translation, shared knowledges, inventing ways to do worlds and telling about.
