Interested in the actual and metaphorical malleability of space, Do-Ho Suh constructs installations that are intricate and architecturally specific yet conceptually ambiguous. Exploring the relationships between individuality, collectivity, and anonymity, his installations invite the viewer to consider the experience of space, whether moving about painstakingly-sewn, diaphanous fabric replicas of his living quarters, walking on surfaces composed of thousands of miniature human figures, or viewing their own reflection inside a kimono made of stainless-steel military dog tags.
Born in Korea in 1962, Do-Ho Suh now lives and works in New York City. He has received multiple awards and widespread critical commendation. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held in galleries in London, Tokyo, New York, and Madrid and in museums worldwide, including the Seattle Art Museum, Artsonje Center in Korea, and the Whitney Museum of American Art at Philip Morris. Suhs work has also been included in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Contemporary Art Society, Edinburgh, and the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, among others. Suh was chosen to represent Korea at the 49th Venice Biennale in 2001. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, among others.
