Metropolis Rise : New Art from London is an excursion into the vibrant depths and folds of Londons current contemporary art scene, investigating ideas around collectivism, self-organisation, event, critical agency and the production and circulation of art and ideas in todays multilayered metropolis. Selected from shows at public institutions, independent project spaces, art groups, emerging galleries and nomadic events and exhibitions across London, the works and documentation form a social anthropology and an index of activity and artists. The display structure – part customs inspections desk, part natural history display – presents a vivid array of art-making, with original sculpture, photography, painting, drawing, and video alongside recordings and ephemera of performances, installations, curatorial projects, independent publishing and film & fashion events.
Metropolis Rise : New Art from London will take place at the Moganshan art district which has been at the forefront of artistic development in Shanghai in recent years. The exhibition will then travel to DIAF 06 at 798 Space, Beijings largest independent yearly art event.
Metropolis Rise : New Art from London is accompanied by an extensive Chinese and English language colour catalogue (hardback, 198pp, 20 x 27cm, ed 1000 – supported by Arts Council England, available from www.metropolis-rise.co.uk). With new essays by David Burrows, Dr. Suhail Malik, Dave Beech, and David Medalla, the publication also contains contextualising texts by the curators and extensive documentation of artists projects and writings from selected participating artists.
