Tramway is proud to present the most comprehensive exhibition of Keith Coventrys painting to date. At a key point in the artists career, the show brings together several of his painting series including the Albany, White Abstracts, and Estate series and includes works which have never been seen by the public before.
Keith Coventrys work parallels the potency and resonance of notions of tradition with the failed utopian visions of a modernist society, re-placing them both within an art historical context. Both the abstract and narrative paintings contrast a powerful surface allure with the derelict, the degraded and the decay of their subject matter, exploring complex political-economic ideas and tracing the failure of modernism as a route from anachronistic social structures towards cultural and aesthetic freedom.
Keith Coventry studied at Chelsea School of Art and has gone on to become one of the UKs foremost contemporary artists. He has shown widely in the UK and Europe including the Charles Saatchi curated Sensation exhibition (1998, Royal Academy, London; Brooklyn Musuem, New York, 2000). His work is included in collections all over the world including that of the British Council, the Arts Council of England, the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis.
