Architecture and Housing / Architecture and Re-Use
August 15, 2021
The Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich invites applications for two professorships. The professorships are located at the Institute of Design and Architecture IEA.
Design studios are the foundation of architectural education and critical thinking. They provide the most effective and interdisciplinary forum in which the sharing of knowledge stimulates the architectural imagination to develop and to discuss innovative responses to the most pressing societal and environmental issues of our time. In this context, and with respect to continuity and complementarity, two professorial positions at the Institute of Design and Architecture (IEA) are to be filled, with the following research and teaching focusses:
Architecture and Housing
Architecture and Re-Use
The new professors are mainly responsible for giving lectures and running a design studio for students in the 5th and 6th semesters of the Bachelor’s degree programme and in the Master’s degree programme (incl. master’s thesis) taking into account areas of overlap between manufacturing techniques, materials properties, economics and sustainable resource management. She or he will be expected to teach theoretical foundations, methodological skills and specialized knowledge in the field of architectural design with regard to one of the above mentioned focuses.
Research activities cover, similar to teaching, topics in the area of architectural design, as well as architectural strategies with regard to the complex requirements of the building industry. Cross-disciplinary collaborations are explicitly welcomed.
The successful candidates must have a substantial architectural oeuvre to her/his credit—providing evidence of their expertise with regard to the above research and teaching focus in particular, and of their competence in planning and realization of high-quality buildings in general. They have a knowledge on the latest digital workflows and opportunities of digitalization. Their qualifications usually include completed university studies as well as experience in teaching and research. The new professors are expected to have a strong interest in collaboration with chairs across department’s institutes—especially with the Institute for Landscape and Urban Studies LUS (Housing) and the Institute of Construction History and Preservation IDB (Re-Use)—as well as across different departments. Additional qualifications include competence in leading a team and the commitment to the development of the Department of Architecture beyond the boundaries of the specialty itself. The language of instruction should be German or English.
