An Exhibition of Art in Public Domain
August 14–September 26, 2021
Hummings: An Exhibition of Art in Public Domain will open on August 14 with the participation of Jonathas de Andrade, Kerstin Bergendal, Rune Bosse, Ayşe Erkmen, Asunción Molinos Gordo, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Lea Guldditte Hestelund, Jakob Jakobsen, Maider López, Jumana Manna, Olga Ravn, Karin Sander, Christoph Schäfer, SUPERFLEX, Hale Tenger and Héctor Zamora.
Hummings is the pilot edition of a recurring exhibition series in the urban and rural geography of Køge, Denmark. Initiated by KØS Museum of Art in Public Spaces, it will serve as an experimental platform for the future prospects of art in public domain.
Proposing to listen to a language that we cannot speak, yet; a language of things, a language between living and non-living, the pilot exhibition Hummings aims to put forward a plurality of voices, serving as a metaphorical device to reflect on the possibility of voicing the invisible, silent, unpriviledged, repressed or vulnerable for a “Collaborative Survival,” as the American anthropologist Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing refers to it. Indicating indistinctive sounds and expressions referring to a pre-language state, which we cannot define and understand clearly, humming can be considered as a common thread between human beings and “other-than-human-persons,” thus, can serve as a beginning to think over the interspecies relationship. Informed by recent research in microbiology and anthropology to social sciences and environmental studies, the exhibition seeks to cultivate an experience in the junction of these separate scientific fields and contemporary art.
The research of certain projects has started much before the exhibition was imagined, and some will continue after the closing date, and have afterlives, coming from the past leaking into the future, opening the exhibition up to its future editions, contexts and influences.
Juxtaposing fiction and poetry with the public spaces of Køge, some projects in the Hummings exhibition comment on the present manifestations of art in public domain, attempting to connect its history with the current debates towards its future incarnations while others think around the issues of urban development and demography in Køge, humming for new ways of experiencing and living in the city.
Hummings is co-curated by KØS curator Fulya Erdemci and KØS director Ulrikke Neergaard.
