The Yale School of Art is pleased to announce that the 2020 thesis exhibitions cancelled last spring in the wake of COVID-19 were successfully restaged throughout the spring and summer of 2021.
In late March, 2020 MFA graduates in Sculpture, Genevieve Goffman, Lauren Lee, Anna Alvina Miller, Randi Renate, David Roy, and Alex Zak, presented the second half of No Deep Kissing, as the timing of COVID cancellations bifurcated the 2020 Sculpture cohort’s presentation of work. Featuring new works and installations, the exhibition celebrates not only the culmination of the artists’ graduate school careers, but also the continued dedication to their practices in a year of great upheaval and duress.
Staged in 32 Edgewood Gallery from March 22–28, 2021, members of the public are invited to visit the exhibition website available at nodeepkissing.yaleschoolofart.org, and peruse the installation through its 3D walkthrough. All information related to No Deep Kissing can also be accessed through the School of Art’s exhibitions archive.
In April, the undergraduate art majors who graduated from Yale College in 2020 followed with their thesis exhibition Unfinished in 32 Edgewood Gallery. Featuring work by Itai Almor, Marianne Ayala, Lena Christakis, Sadie Cornette-Cook, Ronan Day-Lewis, Amalia Ono, Hazal Özgür, Matthew Reiner, Harrison Smith, Alice Tirard, and TanTan Wang, Unfinished was on view April 7–12, 2021 to the Yale School of Art community.
The exhibition is accompanied by the website yale20.art, created by Itai Almor and developed in collaboration with exhibiting artists, as well as a catalog designed by Herdimas Anggara and Anezka Minarikova, Graphic Design MFAs ‘21. All information related to Unfinished, including its virtual walkthrough, can be accessed through the School of Art’s exhibitions archive.
In May, the 2020 MFA graduates in Graphic Design presented On my way!, an exhibition and publication narrated and documented by the seventeen dispersed graduates: Bryant Wells, Cindy Hwang, Dawoon Jeon, Jeong Woo Kim, Jinu Hong, Julia Schäfer, Kyla Arsadjaja, Laura Huaranga, Maria Candanoza, Nicholas Weltyk, Orysia Zabeida, Sam Wood, Steven Rodriguez, Tuan Quoc Pham, Wenwen Zhang, Yuanbo Wang, and Zhiyan Huang. Exploring the twilight between production and documentation, between education and industry, the project coalesced around collaborative contributions sent and received through SMS/MMS messaging and archived online in a central repository that functions as the exhibition website.
Staged in 32 Edgewood Gallery from May 13–19, 2021, members of the public are invited to visit this repository available at omw.chat, and peruse the exhibition’s 3D walkthrough. All information related to On my way! can also be accessed through the School of Art’s exhibitions archive.
In June 2021, the final 2020 thesis exhibition was installed in Green Hall Gallery: Hindsight 2020, a presentation of work by the 2020 MFA graduates in Photography. Featuring work by Angela Chen, D’Angelo Christian, Robert Andy Coombs, Rory Hamovit, Elizabeth Hibbard, Dawn Kim, Morgan Levy, Jane Lowe, Allison Minto and Jiajun Wang, Hindsight 2020 was on view June 17–24, 2021 to the Yale School of Art community.
Members of the public are invited to visit the online exhibition, with texts by David Campany and Efrem Zelony-Mindell, which launched this week at mfaphoto2020.yaleschoolofart.org. A 3D walkthrough for this exhibition is also available, and all information related to Hindsight 2020 can be accessed through the School of Art’s exhibitions archive.
