July 7–8, 2021
Artists: Hélène Amouzou, Brahim Tall, Patrick Wokmeni, Muhiba Botan, Rami Hara, Prignot & Alvarez, Chrystel Mukeba
Naître aux mondes is a project curated by Estelle Lecaille (mòsso, Brussels) and Simon Delobel (KIOSK, Ghent) that will take place in Arles in the first week of July 2021 and is supported by the Flanders Arts Institute, Wallonie-Bruxelles-International, the Direction des Arts plastiques contemporains of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles and the General Representation of the Government of Flanders in France.
Naître aux mondes offers a route of informal and fortuitous encounters in the public space with Belgian or Belgium-based photographers with autonomous artistic positions, singular individualities and diversified practices and genres: from portrait photography and self-portraits to documentary photography and photo collages. The curators have chosen photographers who deserve recognition by the general public: Hélène Amouzou, Brahim Tall, Patrick Wokmeni, Muhiba Botan, Rami Hara, Prignot & Alvarez and Chrystel Mukeba.
At a time when current policies are geared towards xenophobia, the closing of borders and the withdrawal of identity, it seems fundamental to show the work of artists who propose another vision of our society: multicultural, cosmopolitan and rich in constantly renewed external contributions. The photographic proposals were chosen for their ability to break down imaginary borders, to decompartmentalise our systems of thought and mental constructs linked to the other, allowing us to understand that we form a single living human community. Addressing the other through art remains a unique way of opening up to the possible and to others, and of rethinking our relationship to the world.
The photographers will be present on location to meet the public and talk about their work on July 7 and 8 from 4–8pm. A Google map with the various exhibition locations will be available on the dedicated website and social networks. A publication will be distributed in Arles and is available upon request.
