Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2020 opens at South London Gallery (SLG) on May 19 and runs until June 6, 2021. Showcasing the work of 36 artists emerging from UK art schools and alternative education programmes, the exhibition offers a preview of some of the most exciting and diverse practices of the next generation of artists.
The exhibiting artists, whose work is on display across both SLG sites, were selected from over 1500 applications by internationally renowned artists Alexandre da Cunha, Anthea Hamilton and Linder. Prominent themes in this year’s exhibition include: dislocation and home; archives and memory; cyber identities; landscapes and the environment. These are explored through a variety of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, sound and moving image.
Sitting alongside the exhibition is a specially created digital platform, which includes artworks, texts, sound and moving image work by this year’s selected artists. The platform also includes artists’ interviews by a range of emerging curators and writers, as well as unique insights by artist Adham Faramawy, writer and curator Tendai Mutambu, academic, curator and writer Professor Sarah Perks and artist and curator Morgan Quaintance.
“Following the successful launch in September of our new digital platform, which presents the exciting work by the 36 artists selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2020, we are delighted to be returning to the SLG for the third consecutive year. We have been really heartened by the artists, selectors, partners and funders willingness to come along with us on this most unexpected of journeys this year as we have moved to increase our digital and online activity in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Complimenting this online activity is the exhibition at the SLG, and we look forward to welcoming all of our supporters and audiences as they explore the selected work at the gallery.” —Kirsty Ogg, Director, New Contemporaries
