Lewis Center for the Arts Lecturer and Princeton Arts Fellow

Princeton Arts Fellows, funded in part by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will be awarded to artists whose achievements have been recognized as demonstrating extraordinary promise in any area of artistic practice and teaching. 

The Lewis Center is designed to put the creative and performing arts at the heart of the Princeton experience. This mission is based on the conviction that exposure to the arts helps each of us to make sense of our lives and the lives of our neighbors. We pursue this mission by bringing together a vibrantly diverse community of people with different backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, skills and talents. 

As part of their submitted application materials, we encourage all applicants to describe their experiences with encouraging diversity and inclusion in their artistic practice, teaching and/or research in the past and present, and their ability to make future contributions. Any submitted statement should include their potential for supporting the Lewis Center’s commitment to diversity and to furthering equitable practices within the arts as well as their potential to mentor and educate students from backgrounds underrepresented in the candidate’s artistic field. 

Applicants should be early career composers, conductors, musicians, choreographers, visual artists, film makers, poets, novelists, playwrights, designers, directors and performance artists who would find it beneficial to spend two years working in an artistically vibrant university community. The department is committed to fostering an academic environment that acknowledges and encourages diversity and differences. The successful candidate will pursue academic excellence in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings.

Fellowships are for two academic years. An 86,000 USD salary for each year is included. Fellows will be in residence for academic years 2022–23 and 2023–24 at Princeton, interacting with our students, faculty and staff as part of the Lewis Center for the Arts and the Department of Music. The normal work assignment will be to teach one course each semester subject to approval by the Dean of the Faculty, but Fellows may be asked to take on an artistic assignment in lieu of a class, such as directing a play or creating a dance with students. Applicants are not required to have prior teaching experience and although the teaching load is light, our expectation is that Fellows will be full and active members of our community, committed to frequent and engaged interactions with students during the academic year. 

To apply, please submit a curriculum vitae, a statement about how you would hope to use the two years of the fellowship at this moment in your career, contact information for three references (should the search committee choose to contact references, please do not request letters or have letters sent in advance of a request from the search committee), and work samples (i.e., a writing sample, images of your work, video links to performances, etc.). You are also encouraged to submit an optional diversity and inclusion statement as part of your application package. 

Applicants can only apply for the Princeton Arts Fellowship twice in a lifetime. 

Princeton Arts Fellows may not hold concurrent teaching positions at other institutions for the duration of the fellowship. This Fellowship cannot be used to fund work leading to a PhD or any other advanced degree. Holders of PhD degrees from Princeton are not eligible to apply.
