Nominees for the New Technological Art Award 2022

In reply to the call for entries for the international contest New Technological Art Award (NTAA) 2022, 836 candidates representing 72 nationalities worldwide have applied.

Out of these projects, an international jury has selected 20 nominees:

The jury members who casted their vote were Yves Bernard (founder of iMAL, curator and artist), Edwin Carels (curator new media exhibitions), Jean-Marie Dallet (artist, research professor at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne), Tom Dekyvere (artist), Nick Ervinck (artist, winner of the update_2 public award), Ralph Dum (scientific officer and senior expert of the European Commission), Karen Helmerson (program director for Electronic Media, Film & Visual Art at the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA)), Julien Maire (artist and laureate of the update_2 jury prize), Françoise Meesen (Liedts-Meesen Foundation), Alain Thibault (artistic director ELEKTRA Montreal) and Stef Van Bellingen (consultant for Zebrastraat / artistic leader VZW Warp).

The nominees will compete for the jury award and the public award (both a cash prize of EUR 5000), which will be announced on the last day of the exhibition (to be held from February 5 until March 13, 2022 at Zebrastraat Ghent, Belgium).

Zebrastraat
During the last few years, Zebrastraat Ghent has developed into a stimulating knowledge centre with a strong interest in art. Every two years we organize a biennial called update_, linked with the New Technological Art Award (NTAA) contest, which tries to fill in a gap in the mainstream art world, by paying attention to the technological developments that drive our global culture.

NTAA selects and presents creations in which the culture-forming role of technology occupies a central place. Low or high tech, intuitive or experimental, the creations always draw our attention to actual innovative trends. The exhibition of achievements of the selected winners is a compass that orients you to the relevant temporal and resilient use of technology in the artistic sector.

Participants and winners of the previous edition were: Ran Ancor (Italy), Sofian Audry and Monty Cantsin (Canada), Ralf Baecker (Germany) (winner award in collaboration with the STARTS-program of the European Commission), Thijs Biersteker (NL), Kenny Wong Chi-Chuen (Hong Kong), Heather Dewey-Hagborg (US) (winner jury award), Emanuel Gollob (Austria), Daniel Jolliffe (Canada), So Kanno and Yang02 (Japan), Shinseungback Kimyonghun (South Korea), Greg Marshall (Canada), Miranda Moss (South Africa) (winner public award), onformative (Germany), Matthew Ostrowski, Marlene Reischl (Austria), Saša Spacal and Mirjan Švagelj (Slovenia), Studio Jol Thomson (Canada), Noriyuki Suzuki (Japan), Tehran Platform (Iran) and Fabien Zocco (France).

There will be a catalogue of the NTAA’22 exhibition, published by Artha books.
