Whitechapel Gallery, the UK’s leading public gallery for contemporary art, and London South Bank University are now accepting applications for their new MA Curating Art and Public Programmes course. This full-time one-year programme begins in September 2021. There is already a high level of interest for this course and spaces are filled on a first come first serve basis; prospective students are encouraged to apply by June 13, 2021 at the latest. The distinctive curriculum offers a one-of-a-kind, integrative experience working in the field of contemporary art, developing exhibitions and multi-disciplinary and inclusive public programmes. Students are introduced to specialised aspects of curatorial practice through dedicated lectures and workshops delivered by forward-thinking professionals, including sessions such as Commissioning Art, Writing on Contemporary Art, Navigating the Art World, Curating Archives, Networked Curating and the Museum and its Ethics. All teaching will take place at London South Bank University. In addition, during the 20-week Professional Placement module students will work alongside highly-experienced staff at Whitechapel Gallery.
Faculty is composed of established art professionals from Whitechapel Gallery as well as independent curators, critics and other experts from related fields.
As a student of this programme, you will gain:

–First-hand exposure to the devising, researching and implementation of art exhibitions and public programmes.
–Insight into a wide range of curatorial strands such as commissioning art and new media, curating archives, curating public and private collections, facilitating artist and writers’ residencies as well as curating solo and group exhibitions.
–Cultural awareness and a critical understanding of all aspects of working in an art institution, including developing communications and fundraising strategies in a vibrant international location.
–Practical, intellectual and critical skills through a hands-on, behind-the-scenes experience with Whitechapel Gallery’s rich network of curators, artists, critics and academics.
–Free access to the Whitechapel Gallery’s diverse programme of public talks and events for the duration of the course.
–Free access to numerous museums and galleries across the UK and abroad that are part of the Whitechapel Gallery’s network.

An open day will be held at Whitechapel Gallery on May 29, 9:30–11:30am. Due to Covid-19 restrictions spaces are limited and participants are required to register in advance by emailing MAadministration [at] whitechapelgallery.org. Additional Open Days will be held in the summer of 2021, virtually with LSBU or face-to-face at Whitechapel Gallery.
