IMAGINE BRAZIL

DHC/ART Foundation for Contemporary Art is pleased to present IMAGINE BRAZIL, a major exhibition of contemporary art from Brazil. 

“We all have our own idea of Brazil. It is a country that is close to us and yet at the same time distant, mysterious and uncanny. In a certain way, Brazil is an imaginary country. It is a country of spectacular nature and magic, of ethnic and social diversity. In fact, it is not one country but multiple, variable, rich and overwhelming lands. There is thus no one way to sum up the nation or the country, and the same goes for its art scene.

This is why we have called our exhibition IMAGINE BRAZIL. What you will see is a constellation of works by young artists, our view on emerging Brazilian contemporary art. We also present two further exhibitions within the exhibition: a selection of more established artists who have been invited into the show by the younger ones whom we have chosen, providing a story of recent art in Brazil, and an exhibition of artists’ books by emerging practitioners, curated by Jacopo Crivelli Visconti and Ana Luiza Fonseca. There is no attempt to tell a single truth through these selections, only to make hypotheses and propositions based on our knowledge, sensibility and experience, the personal choices of the young Brazilian artists and the expertise of the Brazilian curators.”

IMAGINE BRAZIL catalogue
The accompanying catalogue offers a text on each of the artists presented and attempts to offer a rich portrait of the contemporary Brazilian art milieu with an introduction by curator and art critic Kiki Mazzucchelli. In order to convey the many variable art scenes across the country’s different regions, specific overviews of the cultural activities in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, as well as Brazil’s five regions from north to south, east to west, are presented in separate texts by seven different authors; Gabriela Motta, Armando Queiroz, Clarissa Diniz, Matias Monteiro, Francisca Caporal, Marcelo Campos, Paulo Miyada. The catalogue is designed by Rune Døli.

DHC/ART programs
DHC/ART complements this exhibition with guided visits led by our curator and Education department, a hands on workshop, an audio introduction through our app, interpretive tools and an interdisciplinary round table event—all with free admission.

DHC/ART Foundation for Contemporary Art
Established in 2007, DHC/ART is a non-profit organization dedicated to the presentation of contemporary art. Housed in two heritage buildings located in the heart of Old Montreal, DHC/ART’s programming has met with critical acclaim both at home and around the world. Each year we offer two to three major exhibitions, a series of public events, special collaborative projects and a forward thinking education program. International in scope while responsive to the context of the city of Montreal, all of DHC/ART’s programming is offered free of charge as a way to reinforce its commitment to accessibility while fostering a discussion on how contemporary art is invested with the topics and ideas that reflect and touch our everyday lives.
