The Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) is pleased to announce the 8th edition of the Independent Studies Programme (PEI), starting in September 2021. Applications for admission will be accepted from April 19 to May 8, 2020.
The 2021–22 PEI will benefit from a permanent research lab held on a weekly basis. Every Monday during the teaching weeks, the programme’s teaching community will get together to listen, talk and devise content and experiences. Their content and methodologies will be pursued by the students in collaboration with the management and co-ordination staff.
The purpose of the lab is to provide a permanent space for questions and action in relation to the programme content, and to formulate working methodologies that go beyond the logic of producing private and individualised knowledge, that exceed the predesigned content and challenge traditional disciplines. The lab will be a place where students can share the state and process of their research projects, a place for group tutorials and for encounters with artists, collectives and thinkers potentially connected with the research in progress. The co-ordinates that structure the programme are: critical visualities and artistic ecologies, philosophies of the imagination, and dimensions of the ecological and social crisis.
These issues map the field in which the courses, seminars and workshops will develop. They are not to be taken as independent approaches or core aspects. Rather, they are interconnected and seek to provide answers to the questions that underlie the programme content.
The programme is divided into four quarters and has a monthly structure involving three weeks of teaching and one of personal research. It begins on September 14, 2021 and ends on September 30, 2022 with the students’ presentations of their research. There will be no teaching in December 2021 nor from the second week of July 2022 onwards. In addition to the taught sessions and workshops, the PEI has an open programme of international seminars, monographic courses and lectures during which participants will meet other agents in the city.
