Kunst und Öffentlichkeit .
40 Jahre Neuer Berliner Kunstverein

(Art and Publicity: 40 Years n.b.k.)

Curated by Sophie Goltz, Kathrin Becker
Exhibition design: Eva Dertschei, Carlos Toledo
Audio-archive: Anne König

An interdisciplinary exhibition with works from the n.b.k. collections Artothek and Video-Forum as well as young artists.

In 1969, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) was founded as an initiative of Berlin residents from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst. The exhibition and outreach project “Kunst und Öffentlichkeit: 40 Jahre Neuer Berliner Kunstverein” (Art and Publicity: 40 Years n.b.k.) does not intend to take a nostalgic look across the past four decades, but rather seeks to show perspectives of art outreach in today’s art world and beyond that emerge from redefining the relationship between art and the public.

The result is an urban cartography linking the history of n.b.k. with artistic and cultural developments in both the divided and reunited city. Issues will include the founding of the association, the emergence of the two collections Artothek and Video-Forum, as well as select exhibitions such as “Skulpturenboulevard” (1987). Works from the collections and by students at UdK Berlin will also be on view in this exhibition, complemented by an audio-archive with testimony from eyewitnesses from the period. The exhibition architecture picks up the issue of the archive, and places an “art barricade” in the midst of the exhibition space, an allusion to the political tumult of the institution’s founding years. In this mise en scène, the visitors will become part of n.b.k., and thus are confronted with questions that are linked to such an institution today: the meaning of art for society, citizen participation, as well as the activation of publicity.

Accompanying the exhibition, an art outreach project took place at Berlin’s Universität der Künste with students of the seminar “History Is a Plastic Medium” (Prof. Dr. Hito Steyerl).

This exhibtion is being held under the patronage of Barbara Kisseler, director of Berlin’s Senate Chancellery.
