International curators organize exhibitions in 18 galleries

curated by_vienna 09 encourages systematic cooperation between galleries and curators. The participating galleries have formed four groups of 4-5 galleries each, and each group invited a curator of its choice. The shows take place within the exhibition spaces of the galleries constituting each group. The project allows visitors to compare the strategies adopted by the four groups of galleries and their respective curators and thereby gain valuable insight into curatorial practices. 43 artists will exhibit within the framework of curated by.
María de Corral and Dan Cameron chose the title INSIDE JOB for their project. This title references the slang term for a robbery committed with the help of a knowledgeable insider, but it primarily points to the status of the exhibition itself, as a phenomenon that employs both the structure and artistic content of an art gallery, while remaining semi-autonomous from that structure. Matthew Higgs combines ten positions under the title CORRESPONDENCES and presents cross-generational “conversations” between artists. BEGINNINGS, MIDDLES AND ENDS the exhibition curated by Gianni Jetzer, unites works that contain narrative structures, without, however, telling the whole story. Jérôme Sans discovers the multiple facets of five artists, coming from different continents, generations and backgrounds within his exhibition project FROM EUROPE TO ASIA AND BACK, AGAIN. LIVING IN A SUITCASE .
curated by_vienna 09 is coordinated and funded by departure, Vienna’s point of contact and funding organization in the field of creative industries including visual arts and the art market.
The opening of curated by_vienna 09 takes place on May 8, 2009 and coincides with VIENNAFAIR 2009. The curated by_vienna 09 exhibitions will be on view from May 6 through June 6 and will be accompanied by a series of panel discussions to be held at the departure lounge of VIENNAFAIR.
