The Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts is one of eight faculties within Lund University and includes Malmö Art Academy, Malmö Academy of Music and Malmö Theatre Academy, also Inter Arts Center and Choral Centre South. The Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts offers Bachelor and Master programs in visual art, music and drama, and various courses of different extent. The Faculty also runs third cycle (postgraduate) studies and artistic research and music education.
Malmö Art Academy has approximately 75 students and offers first, second and third cycle education in fine arts. It is a creative and stimulating educational environment with highly set artistic and educational goals and a very good standing in the art world. Malmö Art Academy has a clear international profile with a broad contact network abroad. The academy has many students and academic staff members from countries other than Sweden.
The doctoral programme in Visual Arts or a degree of Doctor in Fine Arts is based on artistic knowledge and artistic work. This knowledge and work serve as the tools and perspectives for exploring the research issue selected by the student.
The focus of the programme is on independent artistic work, accompanied by a reflective text also addressing the theoretical context.
Admission
Admission is for four years of full-time study leading to a doctoral degree in Fine Arts. Research students are admitted in compliance with Lund University’s admission rules for third cycle studies.
Work duties
The main task for doctoral students is to dedicate themselves to their third cycle studies, which entails running their own research project and attending research studies courses. The language of both tuition and the doctoral thesis is English.
General entry requirements
A person meets the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if they: (1) have been awarded a second-cycle qualification, (2) have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or (3) have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
The higher education institution may permit an exemption from the general entry requirements for an individual applicant, if there are special grounds. Ordinance (2010:1064).
Specific entry requirements
The specific entry requirements for admission to third cycle studies in fine art are met by a candidate who: (1) has been awarded a degree of at least 240 credits in visual arts or has equivalent experience of artistic work, and (2) has produced artistic or curatorial work of an independent nature sufficient for assessment of the candidate’s suitability for the programme, and (3) has a good ability to both understand and write texts in English.
Grounds for assessment
–the applicant’s plan and aim for an artistic project and the admissions board’s assessment of these,
–the applicant’s suitability for artistic research,
–the artistic quality of the project and its feasibility in relation to the timeframe (i.e. a period of four years of full-time study),
–the quality of the project plan in terms of relevance, originality, research issues, links and relevance to the general area of knowledge and proposed methods, and
–the department’s desired specialisation and access to supervisors.
Instructions to applicants
The application is to be written in English. A portfolio and a research plan presenting the applicant’s research project is to be attached to the application. The plan is to contain a project description, method description and a sketch of the implementation of the research project, including a schedule. Terms of employment
Only those admitted to third cycle studies may be appointed to a doctoral studentship. Third cycle studies consist of full-time studies for four years. A doctoral studentship is a fixed-term employment of a maximum of five years. Doctoral studentships are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), chapter 5, 1-7 §§.
