Our Other Us
October 1–November 7, 2021
The fourth edition of the Art Encounters Biennial, Our Other Us, opens in Timișoara, Romania, on October 1, 2021. Organised in close collaboration with local and national institutions, the Biennial reflects the global context of the pandemic and explores the ever-fluctuating relationships between self, other and environment. Showcasing the work of over 100 artists, it features 18 new commissions.
Curators Mihnea Mircan and Kasia Redzisz said: “The Biennial has constituted an unique opportunity for us to explore the potential of art as means of connecting individuals across continents. On the one hand, the exhibitions will invite audiences to look at nature as a source of inspiration and to investigate ways in which we can coexist better, while exploring how we can change in relation to the environment. On the other hand, the fact that the Biennial is taking place, despite many difficulties and challenges, reveals the power that art holds and its ability to connect us regardless of circumstances.”
The Biennial, which comprises two distinct curatorial projects by Mihnea Mircan and Kasia Redzisz, as well as an invited exhibition curated by Maria Rus Bojan and Bogdan Ghiu, will take place in landmark locations and unconventional spaces across Timișoara.
Kasia Redzisz’s exhibition, How To Be Together, will be staged at the iconic Corneliu Mikloși Public Transport Museum; while Mihnea Mircan’s Landscape in a Convex Mirror will take place at the nearby ISHO office building. Seasons End, an historical exhibition curated by Kasia Redzisz exploring the history of the relationship between artists and nature in Eastern and Central Europe, will be held in ISHO House.
Secret Wing, a collaborative project between Maria Rus Bojan and the poet and philosopher Bogdan Ghiu, is organised by Triade Foundation in collaboration with the Timișoara National Art Museum, and will take place on the premises of the latter.
Other venues include Helios Gallery, part of the Visual Artists’ Union of Romania; the recently launched FABER Cultural Centre; and the French Institute in Timișoara.
The Biennial opening weekend, Friday, October 1–Sunday, October 3, includes guided tours with invited curators and artists, activities for children, performances, workshops, talks and a roundtable with invited curators and artists, an opening party and a picnic. The full programme is available here.
