Fall 2009
A catalyst for independent thinking and new forms of collaboration, iCI produces exhibitions, events, publications, and training opportunities that reach diverse audiences around the world. Connecting curators, artists, and institutions to forge international networks iCI is a hub that provides access to current developments in the field, inspiring fresh ways of seeing and contextualizing contemporary art. Founded in 1975, iCI has organized 116 traveling exhibitions, as well as numerous studio visits and tours of private collections, profiling the work of more than 3,700 artists. iCI’s shows have been presented by 570 museums, galleries, and art centers in 47 states and 23 countries worldwide, and seen by over 5.9 million people.
This fall, while 7 exhibitions will be on tour, iCI will pilot a monthly talk series with international curators in New York and a new program of nationwide events:
Exhibitions:
In August, The New Normal opens at Pomona College Museum of Art in Claremont. In September FAX, co-organized with The Drawing Center in New York, will start it’s tour at the Contemporary Museum, Baltimore; Slightly Unbalanced will be presented in Lafayette, Louisiana; and Broadcast travels to Portland, Oregon as part of the citywide Time-Based Art Festival. In October, Experimental Geography opens at Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania and Mixed Signals will be at the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture in Baltimore. New this season, The Storyteller will premiere at the Salina Art Center, in Kansas. Curated by emerging and established curators, the exhibitions collectively feature the work of over 175 artists, including Francis Alÿs, Sophie Calle, Omer Fast, Cao Fei, Claire Fontaine, Ryan Gander, Germaine Kruip, Adrian Paci, Raqs Media Collective, and Hito Steyerl.
Nationwide Events:
A new Curatorial Talk Series will be hosted at the James Cohan Gallery in Chelsea, NY in the fall. Each month an international curator will distill the current happenings in contemporary art, including the artists they are excited by, exhibitions that have made them think, and their views on recent developments in the art world. The first talk will be at 7pm, Tuesday, September 22 with Vasif Kortun, Director of Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center in Istanbul.
On Friday, September 18 iCI’s Director of Exhibitions, Susan Hapgood, will lecture at the Hilliard University Art Museum in Lafayette, Lousiana. On Thursday, October 8 a “Day of Art” in Baltimore for iCI Members and guests will include a private collection tour, visits to two iCI exhibitions, and a talk with Mixed Signals curator Christopher Bedford. On the evening of Thursday, November 19 in Portland, iCI will discuss emerging forms of exhibition-making with artist Harrell Fletcher, co-curator of the forthcoming iCI exhibition, The People’s Biennial.
From December 3-6 iCI will present Let’s Talk Reinvention!, a daily discussion program for the NADA Art Fair Miami Beach 2009, organized by iCI and the New Art Dealers Alliance, featuring artworld professionals who are currently transforming their roles, or supporting constructive change and reinvention.

Help support new programming for 2010—iCI’s 35th birthday—by joining us for an evening of food, music, and performances. Live and silent auctions provide an opportunity to gain unique access to art experiences, from the chance to spend time with an artist, or participate in a work of art, to living in collector’s house for a week. Tickets on sale in September.
