Call for Participants
As part of his participation in Performa09, the third visual art performance biennial of New York City, artist Darius Miksys invites the parents of artists to a group meeting to ponder the unanswerable—how, why, and when did my child become an artist? The goal of this social interaction on November 21, 2-4 pm is not to solve this mystery, but rather to explore the generational move backward as a creative forward-looking exercise. Miksys is, after all, interested in exploring communicative models and turning the tables around.
Darius Miksys’ past interactions have been described as, “a space of projection, expectation, imagination, discussion, hope, love––a radically disobedient and displaced gesture in the art world that speaks to our need of grounding culture in trajectories: where we are, where we come from, and where we are going.” (Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev)
In anticipation of the “Parents Meeting” on November 21st, Darius Miksys comments: “For me, it is hard to believe that most parents did not take part in their children’s decision. Being an artist is a specific position, which requires long-time care and support from both family and state. In fact, I think that the parents who support their children to become artists produce the artist, and are therefore the unacknowledged artists.”
The meeting will take place at e-flux project space at 41 Essex Street on New York’s Lower East Side. If so desired, parents can bring their children.
Parents interested in participating, or artists writing on their parents’ behalf, can send contact information to parents@performa-arts.org. All leads to potential participants are appreciated. When selected, participants will receive a formal invitation from the artist.
This “Parents Meeting” is the third in a series of similar events organized by Darius Miksys. Curated by Raimundas Malasauskas, with production support by Sarah Demeuse. Special thanks to PERFORMA’s Defne Ayas. “Parents Meeting” is supported by the Trust for Mutual Understanding.
